Zoo Miami offers wheelchairs at $14 a day and ECVs at $54 a day. The Safari Tram Tour is the step-free alternative to rolling the full loop. Adult admission is $25.95 plus tax; seniors 65+ get 25% off.

Reserve a wheelchair or ECV in advance because they sell out. Service animals are welcome throughout the zoo.

Accessibility at a glance

Accessibility details
WhatDetailsStatus
Step-free entrance
The main entrance plaza, ticket windows and turnstiles are paved and step-free. Accessible parking is in the lot near the entrance gate; Zoo Miami does not publish a separate accessible-parking map, so flag your placard at the parking attendant and they will direct you to the closest space.
Partially confirmed
Vertical access
Most of Zoo Miami is single-level open air. The Florida: Mission Everglades zone has an elevated boardwalk; the Amazon and Beyond exhibit uses ground-level paths. There are no major elevator-served vertical transitions across the public route. The Safari Tram Tour boards at the central plaza and follows a route around the African plains and Asia zones.
Partially confirmed
Accessible toilets
Wheelchair-accessible restrooms are available in the visitor restroom blocks distributed across the zoo. Zoo Miami does not publish a per-block map; ask at the main entrance for the closest accessible restroom to your route.
Partially confirmed
Companion entry
Zoo Miami does not offer a specific disabled-visitor admission discount. Adult admission is $25.95 plus tax; child (3-12) is $21.95 plus tax; children 2 and under are free. Seniors 65 and older receive 25% off regular admission. To arrange a specific accommodation, contact Gisel Prado at 305-755-7848.

Getting there

Zoo Miami sits at 12400 SW 152nd Street, about 30 km south of downtown Miami in the Richmond Heights area. Driving (or rideshare) is the dominant approach; the zoo's lot is large enough to absorb weekend crowds. The closest accessible Metrobus stops are on SW 152nd Street; Miami-Dade Metrobus is wheelchair-accessible with priority boarding.

If you are flying into MIA airport, allow 45-60 minutes door-to-door by car depending on traffic. An accessible-vehicle rideshare (Uber WAV, Lyft Access) is the simplest option if you do not want to rent a vehicle for a single zoo day.

Renting a wheelchair or ECV

Reserve a wheelchair ($14 all day) or an ECV ($54 all day) in advance through the zoo's rental partner; both rates include tax. Wheelchairs and ECVs sell out on weekends, holidays and during cooler months when attendance peaks. Pre-reservation is the safer option.

If you are using your own equipment, the zoo's paved main loop and venue plazas handle standard wheelchair tires comfortably. Service animals are permitted throughout the zoo.

The Safari Tram Tour

The Safari Tram Tour is a guided open-air tram ride around the central animal habitats. The zoo describes it as an entertaining and relaxing experience for guests with mobility limitations. Trams depart at scheduled times throughout the day; pick up the day's schedule at the entrance.

For a wheelchair user, the tram is the alternative to rolling the full perimeter loop in the Florida sun. It works well as a midday loop, with shorter walking visits to specific exhibits (orangutans, Amazon and Beyond, the African painted dogs) bookending the ride.

Tips for visiting

Florida summer heat is the primary friction. Arrive at the 10:00 opening and plan a midday break in an air-conditioned exhibit or restaurant; the zoo's main visitor buildings have AC. The cooler season (November to April) is the better time for a longer day.

For specific accommodations not covered above (a quieter sensory route, a particular habitat that needs an alternative approach), contact Gisel Prado at 305-755-7848 ahead of your visit. Zoo Miami staff will coordinate.
