Getting there

Fairchild sits at 10901 Old Cutler Road in Coral Gables, about 20 km south of downtown Miami. Driving (or rideshare) is the dominant approach; the visitor lot has designated accessible parking throughout. The closest accessible Metrobus stops sit on Old Cutler Road; Miami-Dade Metrobus is wheelchair-accessible.

If you are arriving from a downtown hotel, allow about 30 minutes by car outside of rush hour. From MIA airport, the drive runs about 45 minutes door-to-door. Uber WAV or Lyft Access provides an accessible-vehicle option without a car rental.

Inside the Garden

Borrow a complimentary wheelchair at any Garden entry point on a first-come basis. The Garden states it is fully accessible: all buildings are reachable via accessible paths, all exhibits are fully accessible, and accessible restrooms are in every public building. The Visitor Center, the Garden House and the Glasshouse Café are the main step-free anchor points across the site.

If you would rather ride than push, the trams are wheelchair-accessible and carry assisted-listening devices. Trams loop through the central garden paths and the rainforest and palmetum zones. The schedule varies by day; check at The Shop in the Visitor Center for the current departure times.

On-site shuttle service is available for guests with disabilities; ask at the Visitor Center if you need a drop-off closer to a specific exhibit. Service animals are welcome.

What to see

The Vine Pergola and the Sunken Garden are signature step-free walks. The Wings of the Tropics butterfly conservatory has a paved path with bench seating and is fully step-free. The Richard H. Simons Rainforest features paved paths under the canopy.

Garden tram tours give a one-loop overview of the African Garden, the McLamore Arboretum and the lakeside palmetum. The tour commentary describes plant collections; the trams' assisted-listening devices make this audible from anywhere in the carriage.

Tips for visiting

Florida heat is the primary friction. Arrive at opening, anchor the day around the Glasshouse Café lunch break in air conditioning, and break up the outdoor circuits with stops at the Visitor Center or the Arts Building. The cooler season (November to April) is the better time for a longer day.

For any specific accommodation (a quieter route, sign-language interpretation, a tram with reserved wheelchair space), contact Fairchild at shop@fairchildgarden.org or 305-667-1651 ahead of your visit.
