Prague Castle wheelchair accessibility
Step-free entry to most exhibition buildings, a basic 450 CZK / reduced 300 CZK ticket, and the four towers plus Golden Lane corridors to plan around.
Most of Prague Castle is step-free. The Old Royal Palace with Vladislav Hall, the St Vitus Cathedral nave, the Basilica of St George, and the Story of Prague Castle exhibition all carry barrier-free entrances. The four towers and the defensive corridors above Golden Lane are stairs only.
The cleanest accessible approach is tram 22 to the Pražský hrad stop, 100 m from the rear gate. Basic admission is 450 CZK; the reduced 300 CZK ticket applies to verified disabled visitors. Allow at least three hours for the four headline buildings.
Accessibility at a glance
| What | Details | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Barrier-free entry to most exhibition buildings | The Old Royal Palace, St Vitus Cathedral nave, the Basilica of St George, the Picture Gallery, and the Story of Prague Castle exhibition publish barrier-free entrances. The cathedral's south tower, the White Tower, Daliborka, and the upper defensive corridor above Golden Lane remain stairs only and are excluded from the wheelchair route. Plan the visit around the buildings that work rather than trying to do all of them. | Confirmed accessible |
| Golden Lane: ground floor accessible, defensive corridor stairs only | Golden Lane itself is at ground level and the row of tiny houses (including Kafka's house at number 22) is rollable along the cobbled lane with care. The upper-level defensive corridor that runs above the houses with the medieval-armoury display is reached by stairs only and is excluded from the accessible route. | Confirmed accessible |
| Reduced ticket 300 CZK for verified disabled visitors | Prague Castle publishes basic 450 CZK / reduced 300 CZK / family 950 CZK on the official prague.eu listing. The 300 CZK reduced rate applies to verified disabled visitors on production of a Czech ZTP card or a recognised foreign equivalent. Bring documentation in print; the door staff are accustomed to international visitors but are not obliged to accept verbal claims. | Confirmed accessible |
| Open daily 09:00 to 17:00 in summer, to 16:00 in winter | The visitor circuit opens at 09:00 daily. Closing is 17:00 from April to October and 16:00 from November to March; last entries are typically 30 minutes before closing on the major buildings. The castle grounds themselves remain open later in summer, but the ticketed buildings close at the published times. | Confirmed accessible |
| Tram 22 to Pražský hrad is the cleanest accessible approach | Tram line 22 climbs the hill from Malostranská metro and stops directly at Pražský hrad on the north side of the castle precinct. Run the metro line A green to Malostranská, change to a low-floor 22, and get off at Pražský hrad; the rear gate is 100 m on the level. The Old Castle Stairs from Malostranská are not wheelchair accessible. | Confirmed accessible |
| Accessible toilets at the main visitor centre | Accessible toilets are at the main information centre in the Second Courtyard, near the entrance to the Old Royal Palace, and at the Picture Gallery. Signage in the courtyards directs to the nearest accessible cubicle. The cathedral interior itself does not have a public toilet; use the one in the Second Courtyard before or after. | Partially confirmed |
| Service dog policy | Czech state and municipal venues admit registered service dogs in line with Czech law. The castle's prague.eu listing does not publish a separate service-dog statement; bring documentation and ask at the information centre on arrival. | Partially confirmed |
Overview
Prague Castle (Pražský hrad) is the seat of the Czech head of state and the largest ancient castle complex by surface area. The grounds occupy the ridge above the Vltava and have been continuously occupied since the 9th century. The visitor route covers four headline buildings: St Vitus Cathedral, the Old Royal Palace, the Basilica of St George, and Golden Lane.
The complex is a series of large courtyards connected by gentle inclines and short flights of stairs around the perimeter. The headline buildings sit on the level of the Third Courtyard; the towers above are stairs only.
Where to enter as a wheelchair user
The cleanest entry is the rear gate from the tram 22 stop at Pražský hrad on the north side. The 100 m approach is on the level and brings you in alongside the Powder Bridge; the route to the Second Courtyard information centre is flat.
The grand front entry from Hradčanské náměstí works for wheelchair users but the Old Castle Stairs are not accessible. To arrive on the front side, take tram 22 to Pohořelec and roll 600 m down Loretánská to Hradčanské náměstí.
The visitor circuit building by building
St Vitus Cathedral nave: the main entrance from the Third Courtyard is barrier-free. The nave is flat and the ambulatory around the choir is rollable. The South Tower is stairs only.
Old Royal Palace and Vladislav Hall: the headline gothic hall is at Third Courtyard level and reached step-free. The lower Romanesque rooms are stairs only. Allow 45 minutes.
Basilica of St George: nave is step-free with one shallow threshold step that a portable ramp covers on request. The crypt is stairs only.
Golden Lane: the row of tiny ground-level houses is rollable along the cobbled lane with care. The upper defensive corridor with the armoury display is stairs only.
Practical details
The cleanest two-building visit is the cathedral and the Old Royal Palace, both reached from the Third Courtyard. Add the Basilica of St George if you have time. Allow at least three hours including a break. Buildings open at 09:00; the information centre opens 15 minutes earlier.
There is no on-site accessible parking inside the precinct. Private taxi drop-off is possible at the Second Courtyard gate; staff will direct you to the accessible route.
