Charles Bridge wheelchair accessibility
Free public access, pedestrian-only since 1965, split granite paving, and a sharp climb at the Lesser Town end. The bridge towers at each end are stairs only.
Charles Bridge is wheelchair-rollable for the full 515 m. The surface is split granite strips laid during the 1965-1978 renovation; pedestrian-only since 1965. The Old Town approach is roughly level; the Lesser Town side climbs sharply. The gate towers at each end are stairs only.
Access is free and open 24 hours. A wheelchair user is best crossing before 09:00 or after 20:00 when the crowd thins and the buskers pack up.
Accessibility at a glance
| What | Details | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Step-free approach from the Old Town side | From Staroměstská metro on Line A (green), the approach is along Křižovnická and across the small Křižovnické náměstí to the Old Town tower gate. The surface is set granite paving with some unevenness near the Statue of Charles IV. The bridge entry passes under the Old Town Bridge Tower at street level; the tower's upper rooms are stairs only but you do not need to enter the tower to cross the bridge. | Confirmed accessible |
| Bridge deck surface: split granite strips since the 1965-1978 renovation | The current deck is split granite strips laid as part of the 1965-1978 renovation, replacing the asphalt surface installed in the 1920s. The strips are broadly even but the joints carry a 2 to 5 mm lip in places. Manual wheelchairs and four-wheel rollators clear the deck without trouble; very small front castors may catch at a joint when the chair is pushed across slowly. | Partially confirmed |
| Pedestrian-only since 1965, free public 24-hour access | The bridge has been pedestrian-only since 1965, when motor-vehicle traffic was permanently banned. There is no toll and the bridge is open at all hours. Buskers and souvenir vendors line the deck from late morning to early evening; the crowd is thinnest before 09:00 and after 20:00. | Confirmed accessible |
| Lesser Town approach climbs sharply | On the Malá Strana side, the bridge ends at the twin Lesser Town Bridge Towers and the Mostecká street climbs steadily towards Malostranské náměstí for around 250 m. A power chair or a manual chair with a strong pusher handles it; manual self-propellers should plan a friend on the handles for this section, or reverse the route to do the climb downhill. | Partially confirmed |
| Both gate towers are stairs only | The Old Town Bridge Tower and the two Lesser Town Bridge Towers all publish 'Objekt není bezbariérový' on their prague.eu listings. Climbing the towers is not part of the wheelchair route. Roll under them at street level instead; the upper views from the towers are not unique to those vantages and the bridge deck itself frames the same skyline. | Confirmed accessible |
| Staroměstská (Line A) on the Old Town side, Malostranská (Line A) on the Lesser Town side | Both Staroměstská on the Old Town side and Malostranská on the Lesser Town side are step-free metro stations on Line A (green). Plan a one-way crossing rather than a round-trip on foot if the Lesser Town climb is a barrier: enter at one metro and exit at the other. | Confirmed accessible |
| Accessible toilets nearest the bridge | There are no public toilets on the bridge itself. The nearest accessible toilets are inside Staroměstská metro on the Old Town side and at the Wallenstein Garden visitor entrance on the Lesser Town side (open April to October). Plan a stop before the crossing. | Partially confirmed |
| 515 m long, 9.4 to 9.5 m wide | The bridge is 515.76 m long and 9.40 to 9.50 m wide. The width is generous for wheelchair passing even with a heavy crowd, but the busiest hours (10:00 to 19:00) leave only the central strip free of standing tourists. | Confirmed accessible |
Overview
Charles Bridge (Karlův most) is the 14th-century stone bridge connecting the Old Town to the Lesser Town across the Vltava. Construction began in 1357 under Charles IV. It carried road traffic until 1965 and is now pedestrian-only. The deck is lined with 30 statues of saints, mostly Baroque originals from the late 17th and early 18th centuries; the most-touched figures have been replaced with copies.
The headline obstacle for a wheelchair user is the steep climb on the Lesser Town side, not the bridge itself.
How to cross step-free
From the Old Town: exit Staroměstská metro on Line A, roll south-west along Křižovnická for 250 m, and enter the bridge under the Old Town Bridge Tower. The route is set granite paving; even but with some lips at the joints near the Statue of Charles IV.
From the Lesser Town: exit Malostranská metro on Line A and roll south along Klárov for 200 m to the twin Lesser Town Bridge Towers. The first 100 m is flat; the bridge approach is at the same level.
If you are visiting Prague Castle the same day, plan the bridge as a downhill walk: tram 22 to Pražský hrad, descend by tram to Malostranská, cross towards the Old Town, and exit at Staroměstská. This avoids the Mostecká climb entirely.
Tips for the crossing
Pick your hour. The bridge is busiest 10:00 to 19:00 in summer; before 09:00 the deck is largely empty. Skip the gate towers (stairs only); the deck itself frames the same skyline.
Plan for wind. The bridge is exposed and the river runs cold most of the year. A blanket over the lap on a winter crossing is sensible.
Practical details
Access is free at all hours; no ticket is required. The bridge is open 24 hours and lit at night. The statues are best read in early morning or late afternoon when the side light picks out the details on the faces.
The nearest accessible toilet on the Old Town side is inside Staroměstská metro; on the Lesser Town side, at the Wallenstein Garden visitor entrance (open April-October).
