Overview

The National Museum is the oldest and largest museum in the Czech Republic. The Neo-Renaissance Historical Building on Wenceslas Square opened in 1891 and is the headline architectural set-piece of the capital's main boulevard. The modern New Building, behind the Historical Building, opened as a National Museum exhibition space in 2009 after the institution acquired the former Federal Assembly building.

The 2019 reconstruction of the Historical Building added lifts, accessible toilets, and the underground corridor that links the two halves of the complex. The wheelchair circuit now covers every public floor of both buildings without surface-level street crossings.

Where to enter as a wheelchair user

The Historical Building entry from Václavské náměstí (Wenceslas Square) is reached via a ramp at the front-left of the main staircase. The ramp climbs to the level of the original front doors; the visitor entry is step-free from there. The ticket desk is in the central hall on the entry floor.

If you start at the New Building (the modern white-and-grey block behind the Historical), enter at street level on Vinohradská. From the New Building, the underground corridor leads to the Historical Building without crossing the road.

What works on the wheelchair circuit

Historical Building: every public floor is reached by lift. The Pantheon on the upper floor (a domed hall lined with busts of Czech historical figures) is accessible. The natural history galleries on the ground and first floors are level throughout. The original Grand Staircase is preserved as a heritage feature; the lifts run parallel to it.

New Building: every public floor is reached by lift. The temporary-exhibition floors are flat and rollable; the auditorium for the museum's lecture series is step-free with reserved wheelchair-user positions at the rear.

Connecting corridor: an underground walkway with a small permanent exhibition on Czech 20th-century history. The corridor is step-free between the two buildings.

Practical details

The museum is open daily 10:00 to 18:00, with some seasonal variation; check the published hours before you travel. The combined complex is large; allow at least three hours for a representative visit covering the Pantheon, the natural-history galleries, and one temporary exhibition.

There is no on-site accessible parking. The nearest accessible drop-off is on Wilsonova alongside the Historical Building, accessible to a private taxi. The Muzeum metro lifts deliver you to the museum's front door without surface crossings.
