Old Town Square wheelchair accessibility

A flat, free, paved square at the heart of the historic centre. The Astronomical Clock chimes outside in the open; the tower above it has a wheelchair lift and ZTP-P holders enter free.

Old Town Square is free, open, and step-free across the full square. The Astronomical Clock is mounted on the south wall of the Old Town Hall at street level and is visible without a ticket. The chime, with the apostles' procession, runs at every full hour from 09:00 to 23:00.

Inside the Old Town Hall the picture splits. The tower is wheelchair-accessible via lift; the historic Gothic Chapel and medieval halls are stairs only. Basic ticket 350 CZK, tower-lift surcharge 100 CZK; ZTP-P holder plus one companion enters free.

Step-free square paved with set granite blocks
Old Town Square is broadly flat. The surface is set granite paving, even across most of the square with some unevenness near the Hus monument and along the cobbled lanes that feed into the square from the north. The Astronomical Clock wall is on the south-east side of the square and a wheelchair user views the chime from the open paving below.
Confirmed accessible
Old Town Hall tower: lift to the viewing gallery
The tower lift carries wheelchair users to the upper viewing gallery directly. The official listing publishes the lift access plainly: 'Přístup na radniční věž je bezbariérový pro invalidy na vozíku' (access to the town hall tower is barrier-free for wheelchair users). The view from the gallery looks down on the square and across to Týn Church and Prague Castle.
Confirmed accessible
Historic chapel and Gothic halls are stairs only
The published policy is direct: 'Historické interiéry bezbariérový přístup nemají' (the historic interiors do not have barrier-free access). This covers the medieval Gothic Chapel of the Virgin Mary, the council chambers, and the underground halls. Wheelchair users see the exterior, the Astronomical Clock from the square, and the upper tower view; the medieval interior tour is not part of the wheelchair circuit.
Confirmed accessible
ZTP-P holder plus one companion enters free
Free admission is published for children under 5 and for ZTP-P holders with one companion ('osoby s průkazkou ZTP/P s 1 doprovodem: zdarma'). The standard adult ticket is 350 CZK. The tower-lift surcharge is 100 CZK for adults and 50 CZK for seniors over 65; the surcharge is paid on top of the basic ticket and is the only way a wheelchair user reaches the tower viewing gallery.
Confirmed accessible
Astronomical Clock is visible from the square at no charge
The Astronomical Clock is mounted on the outer south wall of the Old Town Hall facing the square. The chime, with the apostles' procession in the upper window, runs at the top of every hour from 09:00 to 23:00. No ticket is required to watch the chime. A wheelchair user positions on the square below the clock face; the view of the moving figures is clearest from 5 to 10 m back from the wall.

Staroměstská on Metro Line A is the closest step-free station
Staroměstská station on Line A (green) is 350 m north of the square. Line A boarding ramps are installed at every station so the metro is usable in both directions. The roll from Staroměstská to the square along Pařížská is fully step-free; the surface is set granite paving.

Accessible toilets in the Old Town Hall and at Staroměstská metro
The Old Town Hall publishes an accessible toilet for ticketed visitors. The metro station at Staroměstská has an accessible toilet at the concourse level. The square itself does not have a public accessible toilet; plan the metro stop on entry or exit.

Overview

Old Town Square (Staroměstské náměstí) is the medieval heart of the city. It is hemmed by the Týn Church to the east, St Nicholas Church to the west, and the Old Town Hall with the Astronomical Clock to the south-west.

The Astronomical Clock has shown the position of the sun and moon, the Zodiac, and the day of the year since 1410. The upper window opens at the top of each hour for the procession of the twelve apostles.

Where to enter as a wheelchair user

The square has no controlled entry; roll in from any side. The most direct accessible routes are along Celetná from the Powder Tower or along Pařížská from Staroměstská metro.

To enter the Old Town Hall and the tower, use the main entrance on the square's south-west corner, beneath the Astronomical Clock. The entrance is at street level; the ticket desk and tower-lift lobby are reached step-free.

What works inside and what does not

Tower viewing gallery: wheelchair-accessible via lift. The view looks down on the square and across to Týn Church and Prague Castle. Allow 30 minutes.

Historic interiors (Gothic Chapel, council chambers, medieval underground halls): not wheelchair accessible. Non-wheelchair-using companions can take the 60-minute interior tour while you wait in the lobby.

Astronomical Clock chime: viewed from the open square at no charge. The best vantage for a wheelchair user is 5 to 10 m back from the south wall.

Pairing the visit

Old Town Square pairs with Charles Bridge (400 m south-west along Karlova) and the Jewish Quarter (300 m north along Pařížská). Start at the Square at 09:00 for the chime, roll north to the Jewish Quarter, lunch back on the Square, end on Charles Bridge late afternoon. Prague Castle is the natural next-day pairing via tram 22 or metro to Malostranská.
