Palazzo Ducale wheelchair accessibility

What is step-free in the Doge's Palace, what is not, and how to plan a visit that uses the accessible route.

The regular Palazzo Ducale visit is fully accessible. A lift serves the upper-floor staterooms, including the vast Sala del Maggior Consiglio. The ground-floor toilets are fully accessible. The Bridge of Sighs, the Prisons, the Secret Itineraries and the Armoury are not accessible.

A companion of a certified disabled visitor enters free under the Fondazione Musei Civici admission rules; confirm the disabled visitor's own fare at the ticket office on arrival.

Getting there

Palazzo Ducale faces the lagoon on Piazzetta San Marco, immediately east of the basilica. The closest accessible vaporetto stop is San Zaccaria (Line 1, Line 2, Line 4.1, Line 4.2 and most outer-island services). From the San Zaccaria pontoon, head west along the Riva degli Schiavoni waterfront for about 200 metres, past the Bridge of Sighs, and the lagoon-side facade of the palace is on your right.

The accessible entrance for wheelchair users is the Porta del Frumento on the lagoon-side facade. The main visitor entrance on the courtyard side of the palace has steps; staff will direct you to the Porta del Frumento on arrival. Show your disability documentation at the ticket office and proceed straight to the accessible entrance.

The accessible route through the palace

The regular visit is fully accessible. A lift carries you from the ground-floor entrance up to the staterooms on the piano nobile. From there a step-free route takes you through the Sala dello Scrutinio, the Sala del Senato, the Sala del Collegio, and into the Sala del Maggior Consiglio.

The Sala del Maggior Consiglio is the room most visitors come for. Wikipedia summarises the scale plainly: "53 meters long and 25 meters wide, this is not only the largest chamber in the Doge's Palace but also one of the largest rooms in Europe." Tintoretto's Paradise covers the wall behind the doge's throne. The route circles the room and exits via the lift back to the ground floor.

The courtyard, the Scala dei Censori, and the ground-floor exhibits along the lagoon side are also part of the regular accessible route. Plan around 90 minutes for a wheelchair visit, longer if you stop for the upper-loggia views back over the Bacino di San Marco.

What is not accessible

The published accessibility page is direct: "The Secret Itineraries, Prisons and Armoury are not accessible." This rules out three of the palace's signature add-on routes. The Secret Itineraries tour uses narrow stepped staircases between historic chancery offices. The Armoury occupies an upper-floor mezzanine reached by stairs. The Prisons, on the far side of the Bridge of Sighs, are reached only via the stepped bridge itself.

If you bought a ticket that includes any of these and discover on arrival that you cannot use it, ask at the ticket office. The Fondazione Musei Civici staff will reissue you a regular accessible-route ticket. Walk-up is normal; pre-book only at peak summer weekends.

Hours, admission and what to bring

Palazzo Ducale is open daily. Closing times shift by season; the most current hours are on the official site. The address is Piazza San Marco 1, 30124 Venezia. Bring your European Disability Card or a national disability card with a recent doctor's letter on letterhead.

The Fondazione Musei Civici operates Palazzo Ducale together with the Correr Museum on the opposite side of Piazza San Marco. The standard Piazza San Marco combined ticket covers both. The Musei Civici admission rules state that the companion of a certified disabled visitor enters free; the disabled visitor's own fare is set at the ticket office, so confirm on arrival with your disability documentation.

Practical tips

Save the upper-floor balconies for last. The Loggia dei Soffitti gives you the famous view back over the courtyard, and it sits on the same accessible route as the staterooms. The light is best in the late afternoon.

If you want the Bridge of Sighs experience without the stepped route, the bridge is most photogenic from the Ponte della Paglia just east of the palace on Riva degli Schiavoni. The ponte itself is humped but has a portable ramp option from the Comune di Venezia accessibility programme; check the city accessibility map before you go.
