Basilica di San Marco wheelchair accessibility

Where to enter, where the lift is, what is free, and how to ask for help on arrival.

Step-free entry to the basilica is via the Porta dei Fiori on the north side, which has a permanent ramp. A lift and a stair lift serve the upper Museo di San Marco. Disabled visitors enter free with one companion on presentation of disability documentation at the door. Staff at the basilica help on request.

Getting there

The basilica sits at the east end of Piazza San Marco. The closest accessible vaporetto stops are San Marco Vallaresso on the lagoon side (Line 1 and Line 2) and San Zaccaria a short roll along the waterfront (Line 1, Line 2, Line 4.1, Line 4.2 and several outer-island services). Either landing puts you on a step-free route to the piazza.

From San Zaccaria, head north past the waterfront cafes to the Bridge of Sighs and turn left through the Porta della Carta arch into the piazza. From San Marco Vallaresso, head north through Calle Vallaresso, cross Piazza San Marco, and turn left at the basilica. The piazza itself is paved with smooth Istrian stone with one moderate camber.

Where to enter: the Porta dei Fiori

The Porta dei Fiori is on the north side of the basilica facing the Patriarcato palace. It has a permanent ramp (the basilica calls it a pedana) for wheelchair users. The basilica's own accessibility page states the policy plainly: "Le persone con disabilità motoria o su sedia a rotelle possono entrare in Basilica attraverso la Porta dei Fiori, che è provvista di pedana."

Approach the door, show your disability documentation to the custode on duty, and you and one companion are admitted free. The basilica states the policy as: "è sempre prevista la gratuità, basterà presentarsi alle porte di ingresso e mostrare al custode di turno la documentazione che attesti la disabilità." There is no separate disabled queue; you simply use the side door rather than the main facade.

The upper Museo di San Marco

The Museo di San Marco occupies the upper floor of the basilica and is reached by a lift (ascensore) and a stair lift (servoscala). The basilica's accessibility page confirms: "Per accedere al Museo, situato al piano superiore, abbiamo ascensore e servoscala." Ask any custode on the basilica floor to direct you to the lift; staff are used to guiding visitors through.

The Museo houses the original bronze horses that once stood on the Loggia dei Cavalli. The Loggia itself is reachable from the Museo and gives you the famous view back over Piazza San Marco. The basilica's published page does not list the Loggia as step-free in detail, so plan on staff assistance from the lift onwards.

The Pala d'Oro and the lower basilica

The Pala d'Oro is visible from the main floor near the chancel as part of the regular basilica visit. The route inside is mostly flat with the marble inlay floor characteristic of San Marco. Two short raised thresholds at internal door arches are the main hazards; staff will fetch a portable ramp if you ask.

The Treasury and the Crypt are not part of the regular accessible route. The basilica's published page does not list either as wheelchair accessible. If either is on your list, ask the custode at the Porta dei Fiori on arrival; staff will advise based on the day's set-up.

Hours, admission and what to bring

Bring your European Disability Card or your home country's official disability ID. A recent doctor's letter on letterhead helps if your card is from outside the EU. The companion is admitted on the same transaction with no separate proof. You do not pre-book; arrive at the Porta dei Fiori, show the document, and you are through.

The basilica is busy. Even with a free disabled-visitor pass, the basilica fills up by mid-morning. Arrive at opening or in the last hour before closing. Photography rules vary by area inside the basilica; staff at the entrance will brief you.
