Palazzo Reale wheelchair accessibility

The palace faces Piazza del Plebiscito in the historic centre. Metro Linea 1 stops at Toledo and Municipio, both within a flat walk of the square. Linea 6 stops at Municipio as well. The accessible-taxi rank at Piazza Trieste e Trento sits one block away if the metro is not the right option for the day.

Side entrances exist on Piazza Trieste e Trento, Piazza del Municipio and Via Acton, but visitors using the main accessible route should head to the principal entrance facing Piazza del Plebiscito. Staff direct wheelchair users to the lifts from the inner courtyard.

The accessibility statement from the palace is plain on the route inside: lifts carry visitors to the museum level and to the giardino pensile, the hanging garden that opens off the royal apartments. The piano nobile, which is where the royal apartment rooms are arranged, has no level changes across its sequence, so once you are on the floor you move freely through the public rooms.

Doorways through the apartment rooms are wide enough for a powered chair. The polished marble floors are smooth but reflective; slow at the joins between rooms because some thresholds are subtle. Staff are present on the floor and signpost the accessible route from the entrance hall.

An accessible toilet is signed within the museum on the visiting circuit. The site also runs a dedicated DAI room (Didattica, Accessibilità, Inclusione) that loans wheelchairs at no cost and arranges tactile itineraries for visually impaired visitors. Assistance dogs are permitted in the apartment rooms. Other animals are not.

Standard ticket and reduced rates change with the exhibition programme; the palace site is the place to check the current standard price. Disabled visitors enter free with one accompanying family member or carer under the Ministry of Culture's tariff rules. EU citizens aged 18 to 25 pay a reduced ticket; under-18s enter free.

Bring photo ID and a recognised disability credential (European Disability Card, a national equivalent that names a disability, or a recent doctor's letter on letterhead). Present them at the ticket desk before joining the entry queue.

The palace is closed on Wednesdays as a standard pattern; confirm the current closure day on the official site before booking transport. The royal apartments are a sustained visit at a slow chair pace; allow ninety minutes for the main circuit.
