Getting there

The entrance is on Via Capodimonte, on the same hill axis as the Museo e Real Bosco di Capodimonte. From the historic centre, an accessible taxi is the simplest option; the climb from Piazza Cavour is steep on foot and not suited to a manual chair. The R4 bus serves the area but is older stock and chair access is case-by-case.

Plan a single trip up the hill rather than two: combining the Catacombe and Capodimonte into one outing splits the climb across one drive and one short level walk between the two sites. The cooperative answers practical access questions over email a day or two ahead.

Inside the catacombs

The catacombs unfold across two levels carved out of tuff under the Sanità district. The upper level, San Gennaro Superiore, holds the wider open chambers that the guided tour normally covers first. The lower level, San Gennaro Inferiore, is reached by historic steps cut into the rock and is the smaller, older part of the complex; access for wheelchair users is the part most subject to a case-by-case arrangement.

The ceiling frescoes in the upper level include some of the earliest surviving Christian painting in Italy. Tours are led by a guide from the cooperative; expect a slow pace and frequent stops. The temperature underground is steady and cool; bring a light layer even in summer.

Booking and tickets

Reservation is mandatory. The cooperative runs guided tours on the hour with the last entry at 17:00. The ticket also covers entry to the Catacombe di San Gaudioso under the basilica of Santa Maria della Sanità nearby. Plan the visit for late morning or early afternoon to leave time for the second site if you intend to combine them.

Ticket prices are not displayed on the cooperative's homepage; the booking system shows the live price at the point of reservation. Email info@catacombedinapoli.it to ask about a disability rate before you book; the cooperative is a small social enterprise and responds quickly.

The Sanita context

The Sanità district is one of the most distinctive parts of Naples: a tightly built quarter on the slope below Capodimonte, with old stone steps, narrow alleyways and active street markets. The catacombs sit at the upper edge of the district. The streets immediately around the entrance are passable for chairs at a slow pace; the deeper warren of the quarter is harder.

Combining the catacombs with a flat coffee stop in the Sanità main square is a manageable add-on. A return down the hill is best done by accessible taxi rather than the steeper foot routes.

Practical details

Address: Via Capodimonte 13, 80136 Napoli. Phone +39 081 744 37 14, email info@catacombedinapoli.it. The site is closed on Wednesdays and on 25 December as standard. Tours run year-round otherwise; the cooperative posts the day's hours on their homepage.

The cooperative behind the Catacombe is a Sanità-based community enterprise and the visit is also the easiest way to support the social-business model that has revitalised the quarter in the last decade. The Catacombe di San Gaudioso visit, included with the same ticket, completes the picture.
