Top of the Rock wheelchair accessibility

Fully step-free at Rockefeller Center. Elevators from street level to the 70th floor. Lowered glass barriers on the open-air deck so seated visitors can take in the skyline view.

Top of the Rock is the most wheelchair-friendly of the three big midtown observatories. Step-free from street level, elevators reach all three observation decks on the 67th, 69th and 70th floors, and lowered sections of the glass barriers let seated visitors take in the view. Public restrooms are wheelchair-accessible. Priority access skips the standby queue for disabled visitors.

Getting there

Top of the Rock is in Rockefeller Center, with the dedicated observatory entrance at 50 Rockefeller Plaza on 50th Street, between Fifth and Sixth Avenues. The closest accessible subway is 47-50 Streets-Rockefeller Center (B, D, F, M) with elevators to the platform; the underground concourse leads directly into Rockefeller Center.

From Grand Central (4, 5, 6, 7 trains and Metro-North), it is a step-free walk west along 47th Street. Yellow cabs and accessible-vehicle dispatch drop on 50th Street directly outside the observatory entrance, where the kerb cut is on the north side of the street.

At the entrance and through security

Tell the door staff that you need step-free access and they will direct you straight to the accessible lane. Priority access is given to disabled visitors and to those travelling with special needs, so you do not wait in the standby queue.

Security screening is airport-style and one lane is held for wheelchair-accessible screening. Past security, the same elevator bank serves all visitors. The first lift carries you to a transfer floor; a second lift continues to the 67th-floor indoor observatory.

On the observation decks

The 67th, 69th and 70th floors all feature wide pathways and lowered sections of the glass barriers so seated visitors can enjoy unobstructed views. The 67th floor is enclosed with floor-to-ceiling glass. The 69th floor is partially open-air with a covered deck. The 70th floor is the top, open-air deck with the panoramic view of the Central Park and midtown skylines.

Each deck has accessible seating and bench space along the perimeter. The 70th floor includes a small portion that is more compact in width; the main viewing edges remain wheelchair-accessible.

Tips for visiting

Sunset is the most popular slot. Book a timed ticket online in advance, and arrive 30 minutes before your slot to allow for security and the lift transfer. Daytime visits are quieter and the elevators move faster.

Licensed service dogs are welcome. Printed transcripts of the short films played in the deck experiences are available on request at the entrance. The lowered-barrier sections are the best viewing positions for photography from a seated angle.
