Disability discounts in Florence

Where it is free, what the desk wants to see, and which sites stay closed to a wheelchair.

At Italian state museums in Florence (Uffizi, Pitti, Boboli, Accademia, Bargello), disabled visitors and one companion enter free. Show a disability ID, accessible-parking card, or European Disability Card at the desk. Civic museums (Palazzo Vecchio) and the Cathedral complex run separate schemes; check each desk.

Three layers run in parallel. The national Ministry of Culture sets free admission for disabled visitors plus one companion at state museums. The City of Florence runs the Mus.e civic network with its own policy. The Cathedral is run by the Opera di Santa Maria del Fiore.

The walk-up flow is the same at all three. Bring a photo ID and a disability certificate or card. The desk issues free or reduced tickets on the spot.

How to claim free entry at the state museums

Walk to the on-site ticket desk, not the pre-booking line. Show the staff member your disability ID and one piece of photo ID. They issue a free ticket for you and a free ticket for one companion, valid for the same entry window. The Uffizi adds priority access alongside the free admission.

The Uffizi accepts a wider range of proof than the typical national-card scheme. A medical certificate from your home country, a disability badge or card, or a valid accessible-parking card with your name on it all work, provided you also show photo ID. The same logic applies at Pitti, Boboli, and Accademia under the Le Gallerie degli Uffizi umbrella.

Civic museums and the Cathedral run separate schemes

Palazzo Vecchio, Museo Novecento, Museo Stefano Bardini, and the Cappella Brancacci are Mus.e civic sites. They run inclusive-access programmes and tariff exceptions but the desk price is set per venue. Ask before paying; do not assume the state-museum rule applies. The Florence card-pass options (Card del Fiorentino, UniFi student card) are local discounts and not for visitors.

The Cathedral complex sells five products: the Cathedral itself (free for all and step-free), the Baptistery, Brunelleschi's Dome, the Bell Tower, and the Museo dell'Opera del Duomo. Dome and Bell Tower are stairs-only. The combined Cathedral ticket bundles the Museum and Baptistery for a single fee. Check the cathedral box office for the current disabled-visitor rule before paying.

What to bring

A photo ID; your home-country disability card or certificate; an accessible-parking permit as a fallback; and, if you have one, the European Disability Card. The Italian Disability Card programme grants free or reduced access for cultural and transport services across the country, including at participating museums and on Autolinee Toscane buses.
