Uffizi Gallery wheelchair accessibility

Step-free entry from via della Ninna, free admission for disabled visitors and one companion.

The Uffizi has step-free entry via the via della Ninna ramp. Disabled visitors and one companion enter free with priority access. The galleries are on the first and second floors, both reached by lift. Wheelchairs, walkers, and electric scooters are loaned at the desk. Accessible toilets and a baby pit-stop are inside.

The collection is the reason to plan a full half-day. The Botticelli room (Primavera and the Birth of Venus), Leonardo's Annunciation, Caravaggio's Medusa, and the Tribuna are the famous stops. Allow three hours at the slowest; the route is long.

Free entry covers the disabled visitor plus one relative or accompanying person. European Disability Card holders are explicitly accepted. The Uffizi also accepts a home-country medical certificate, a disability badge, or, as a fallback, a valid accessible-parking card with your name on it. Pair the documentation with photo ID at the desk.

Step-free entry via the via della Ninna ramp
The main ticketed entrance is via della Ninna, on the side of the building. The ramp lands at the accessible ticket office. The standard entrance off Piazzale degli Uffizi has steps; do not queue there if you are using a wheelchair.

Lifts to both gallery floors
Elevators sit at the end of the visit route and serve the first and second floors. East Wing lift guidance is published in the accessibility notice for visitors needing second-floor access; check it before you arrive in case of a temporary closure.

Accessible toilets along the route
Accessible toilets are signed throughout the gallery floors. The accessibility notice lists them alongside the baby pit-stop, food and drink area, and accessible ticket office.

Getting there

The Uffizi is on the south side of Piazza della Signoria, two minutes from the river. Tramvia line T2 (Florence Airport to San Marco Università) stops at Piazza dell'Unità about a kilometre away, on level pavements and flagstone streets. The bus stops nearest the gallery are on Lungarno degli Archibusieri across the Ponte Vecchio, served by the Autolinee Toscane city lines.

If you are driving, the closest accessible-parking bays are around Piazza del Carmine and the underground garages on Lungarno Pecori Giraldi. Florence's ZTL (limited-traffic zone) covers the entire historic centre. Vehicles displaying a European or Italian accessible-parking permit are exempt but must be registered with the city in advance to avoid an automatic camera fine.

Step-free entrance and the gallery route

Enter from via della Ninna on the building's side, not from the Piazzale degli Uffizi colonnade. The accessible ticket office is inside the via della Ninna door. Pick up your free ticket and a loan wheelchair or scooter if you need one, then take the lift to the gallery floors.

The visit route runs through the first floor (newer rooms, often used for temporary exhibits) and the second floor (the famous Italian Renaissance rooms). Both are reached by lifts at the end of the route. The standard tourist flow is second floor first, then a sweep back through the first floor before exit. Wheelchair users can do the same loop because the lifts work in both directions.

The galleries are continuous and flat once you are on a floor. The Tribuna and the Botticelli room are not stepped. The corridors are wide enough for two wheelchairs to pass. Allow more time for the long corridor on the east side; the windows are part of the experience.

Wheelchair loan, accessible toilets, and rest stops

Borrow a manual wheelchair, a rolling walker, or an electric scooter at the via della Ninna desk. Numbers are limited during peak season (July to September); arrive at opening time if you need a loan chair. Guide dogs are welcome with a current documentation envelope.

Accessible toilets are positioned along both gallery floors and at the food and drink area. The terrace cafe on the second floor (above the Loggia dei Lanzi) is reached by lift and has a step-free outdoor area with a view over the Palazzo Vecchio. A baby pit-stop is also signed if you are travelling with an infant.

Booking and free admission

Disabled visitors do not need a timed pre-booking to take advantage of free admission. Walk to the via della Ninna accessible ticket office, show your documentation and photo ID, and receive a same-day free ticket for the disabled visitor and one companion. The European Disability Card is accepted on the same terms.

If you would like to book ahead anyway (handy in peak season for a guaranteed entry slot), the gallery sells a dedicated reservation type for disabled visitors. Booking does not change the free-entry rule; it pre-allocates the time slot so you do not have to wait at the desk on a busy morning.
