St. Stephen's Basilica wheelchair accessibility
What works on the ground floor of the basilica, what the Panorama Terrace publishes about its elevator, and how the dome lookout actually behaves for wheelchair visitors.
St. Stephen's Basilica wheelchair accessibility in short: the nave is step-free via the main door on Szent István tér, the ground floor is the easy part of the visit, and the Panorama Terrace lookout is reached by elevator alongside the 364-step climb.
Below: getting in, the nave route, the dome elevator, opening hours, and what to confirm on the day.

Getting there
The basilica fronts Szent István tér in Lipótváros, district V. Metro M1 stops at Bajcsy-Zsilinszky út two blocks away and Metro M3 stops at Arany János utca a similar distance. M3 is the rebuilt line and is step-free at every station, so it is the practical wheelchair approach. The walk from either station is short, flat, and on smooth pavement.
Inside the church
The nave is the easy part of the visit. Through the main door on Szent István tér, the floor opens into a flat marble nave that wheelchair visitors can roll across in full. The Holy Right reliquary chapel sits to one side. There is no admission charge for prayer, and a suggested donation for sightseeing. The Treasury and the Panorama Terrace are separately ticketed.
The Panorama Terrace lookout
The basilica's dome and Panorama Terrace are 96 metres above the city; the basilica is tied with the Hungarian Parliament Building as one of the two tallest buildings in Budapest. The lookout can be reached by elevator or by climbing 364 steps, so the elevator is the only realistic option for wheelchair users.
What the venue does not publish in English today is the lift-cabin size and whether the final landing at the top has a step at the door. Both are worth confirming at the ticket desk before buying the lookout ticket. Wheelchair users who can do a one-step transfer typically manage; users on larger powered chairs should treat the dome ride as a probable but not guaranteed yes.
Opening hours
The nave is open Monday to Saturday from 09:00 to 18:00 and Sunday from 13:00 to 18:00 (the Sunday morning is reserved for services). The Panorama Terrace and Treasury are open daily from 09:00 to 19:00, including Sundays, and are the longer-hour part of the building. Plan the lookout for late afternoon for the dusk view across the Pest skyline.
The square outside
Szent István tér is one of central Pest's best-known squares. It is flat, paved, mostly pedestrianised, and lined with cafés and benches. The view straight up the basilica's main façade is one of Budapest's signature photographs. For wheelchair visitors who arrive earlier than the nave opens, the square itself is a perfectly good wait, and the cafés on the south side put their outdoor seating directly on the cathedral square.
