Griffith Observatory wheelchair accessibility

The Observatory is at 2800 East Observatory Road in Griffith Park, on the south slope of Mount Hollywood. Driving is the easiest option; paid parking is required on-site during operating hours and accessible spaces sit closest to the building. The lot fills early on weekends and event nights, so plan to arrive before sunset for the best parking position.

By transit, the LADOT DASH Observatory line runs between the Vermont/Sunset B Line Metro station and the Observatory. DASH buses are wheelchair-accessible with a ramp. The pick-up at the Observatory is at an accessible shuttle drop-off area near the main entrance.

Ramps at the east and west entrances bring you onto the Historic Level. The north doors at the Historic Level are also step-free. From there, the building is a tight cluster of galleries connected by short corridors with lifts and ramps at every level change.

Volunteer staff at the entrance can advise on the quickest accessible route to a specific exhibit or to the planetarium box office. There is no entry queue for free admission, but planetarium shows have separate ticket lines.

The Historic Level holds the centrepiece pendulum, the rotunda murals and the Edge of Space exhibit. The Mezzanine Level holds the planetarium entrance and the Cosmic Connection gallery. The Middle Level is the wheelchair-loan checkout point and the Hall of the Sky. The Lower Level holds the Hall of the Eye and additional accessible restrooms.

Exterior terraces wrap the building on the Hollywood Sign side and the downtown side. Each terrace is ramped from the interior corridor. Public telescopes are set up on the front lawn after sunset on clear nights; staff lower the eyepiece for seated viewers on request.

The Samuel Oschin Planetarium runs three shows on a rotating schedule. Wheelchair seating with paired companion seats is located near the back of the dome, where the angle does not require neck extension. Some seats in this row include retractable armrests for easier transfer.

Buy show tickets at the Mezzanine box office on arrival; they are not sold in advance. Capacity is 290 seats and shows sell out at weekend peaks, so head to the box office before exploring other galleries.

Time the visit so that one show falls at sunset and the public telescopes come out after. The hilltop position gives a 270-degree view of the LA basin and the Hollywood Sign sits directly behind the building. The wind picks up after dark; bring a layer even in summer.

Service dogs are welcome throughout the building. The Café at the End of the Universe (on the Lower Level) has step-free access and accessible seating. Avoid the cafe queue at lunch by visiting later in the afternoon when the daytrip crowd thins.
