Getty Center wheelchair accessibility
Free admission with timed entry. Accessible tram from the parking structure to the hilltop museum. Free wheelchair loans. Lifts between pavilions and through the Central Garden.
The Getty Center is one of LA's easiest big sights to do in a wheelchair. Admission is free, the tram from the parking garage is wheelchair-accessible, free wheelchair loans wait at both tram ends, and lifts connect every pavilion. Book a timed-entry slot online before you arrive.
Accessibility at a glance
| What | Details | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Step-free entrance | The visit begins in the Main Parking Structure off Getty Center Drive. Accessible spaces sit on the entry level and require no reservation. From the parking structure, a short step-free walk leads to the Lower Tram Station; the tram covers the steep grade up to the hilltop campus. End cars hold a wheelchair clearance area; staff ask wheelchair users to board in an end car. | Confirmed accessible |
| Vertical access | Lifts run throughout the site. The Lower Tram Station, the arrival plaza, every museum pavilion (North, East, South, West) and the Getty Research Institute all have lifts. The Central Garden, the only outdoor sculpted feature, is reached by lift from the museum level. Wheelchair users do not need to cross any flight of stairs at any point in a visit. | Confirmed accessible |
| Accessible toilets | All public restrooms have accessible facilities. A family restroom in the Museum South Pavilion provides private space for assisting a companion, and is the most useful stop on a multi-pavilion visit. | Confirmed accessible |
| Companion admission | Admission is free for every visitor, so no companion discount applies. Each visitor needs their own timed-entry reservation. The reservation is free and is taken online before arrival. | Confirmed accessible |
| Wheelchair loan | Free wheelchairs are available on a first come, first served basis at two points: the Lower Tram Station above the parking structure and the Coat Check Room in the Museum Entrance Hall. There is no reservation system, so arrive early on busy days. Walkers and folding seats are not lent. | Confirmed accessible |
Getting there
The Getty Center is at 1200 Getty Center Drive in Brentwood, on a hilltop above the 405 freeway. The Main Parking Structure is the only access route by car; there is no street parking near the museum and ride-share drops are routed through the same arrival plaza. From the airport (LAX) the drive is around 30 minutes outside peak traffic.
Metro Bus 761 stops at Getty Center Drive on Sepulveda Boulevard, a short ride from the Westwood-UCLA area. From the bus stop, a covered ramp leads to the parking structure entrance and tram station. Bus 761 vehicles are wheelchair-accessible with a ramp.
Parking and the tram
Accessible parking sits on the entry level of the Main Parking Structure and does not require a reservation; spaces are first come, first served. The tram from the parking structure to the museum is fully wheelchair-accessible and runs continuously. Each tram is a three-car people mover; staff ask wheelchair users to board the end car, which has the clearance area.
The ride takes about four minutes. At the top, an arrival plaza opens onto the museum entrance. Both ends of the tram have free wheelchair loans on a walk-up basis, which is useful if you are visiting with someone whose energy might run out mid-day.
Inside the museum
The four museum pavilions (North, East, South and West) sit around a central courtyard. Every pavilion is connected by step-free routes; lifts inside each pavilion reach the upper galleries. Bench seating is spread through every gallery, and indoor and outdoor seating is offered throughout the campus.
ASL interpretation can be requested for tours. A visual descriptions audio tour is available for visitors with low vision. The Central Garden, designed by Robert Irwin, is reached by lift from the museum level and has a paved path that loops the planted bowl.
Tips for visiting
Book the timed-entry reservation online before you go. Slots are free but limited at peak times. Pack a layer; the hilltop is exposed and the temperature drops noticeably after sunset. The Getty closes on Mondays, so plan your LA week around the four-day Westside loop (Getty plus Santa Monica or LACMA on the other days).
The campus is large; a full visit takes three to four hours minimum. If you plan to visit the Central Garden, allow extra time for the lift queue at weekend peaks. The on-site cafe has step-free access and a wide door for wheelchair entry.
