Getting there

Shedd Aquarium sits on Chicago's Museum Campus at 1200 South DuSable Lake Shore Drive, alongside the Field Museum and Adler Planetarium. The Museum Campus is a level lakefront site connected by paved paths.

Roosevelt is the closest fully accessible CTA station, serving the Red, Orange, and Green lines. From Roosevelt the aquarium is about a one-mile roll east along Museum Campus Drive. The 146 Museum Campus bus runs from Roosevelt to the aquarium entrance and is faster than walking. The 130 Museum Campus bus runs seasonally (mid-May through Labor Day).

By car, take DuSable Lake Shore Drive to the McFetridge Drive exit. Wheelchair-accessible parking is in the East and Soldier Field lots. Paratransit drop-off is on the campus access road.

Inside the aquarium

The new ramped entry routes most arrivals directly into the Abbott Oceanarium on the main level. Elevators connect the Oceanarium to Wild Reef downstairs and to the historic Grand Hall upstairs. The route is step-free throughout, with wide aisles between the tanks.

Touch tanks at Polar Play Zone and the Stingray Touch experience accept seated visitors; staff position the tanks at a height that works from a wheelchair. The dolphin and beluga viewing windows on the Underwater Viewing level have built-in wheelchair-height ledges. Plan to use the family/companion restroom at your current level rather than backtracking.

Sensory and access programs

Shedd is a KultureCity Certified Sensory Inclusive Venue. Free sensory bags are loaned at the Main Entrance information desk; bags include noise-canceling headphones, fidget tools, verbal cue cards, and weighted lap pads.

Calm Waters is a dedicated event for guests with disabilities and veterans; family members and companions are welcome. Calm Waters runs on select dates with reduced lighting, lower sound, and timed entry capped at a smaller capacity. Check the Shedd events calendar for the next date before planning a visit if you prefer this format.

Service animals

Service animals as defined by the ADA are welcome. Emotional support, comfort, and therapy animals are not permitted anywhere in the building.

Service animals are restricted from two specific routes: the Coastal Walkway at all times, and the full pathway along the Abbott Oceanarium habitats from Secluded Bay through Misty Passage, along Whale Harbor, and the North Pool. Staff can suggest an alternative route if you arrive with a service dog.

Tips for visiting

Reserve a timed ticket online before arrival. Ticket sales close two hours before close and last entry is 45 minutes before close. The aquarium operates 9 am to 5 pm September to Memorial Day, and 9 am to 6 pm in the summer.

If you qualify as a Chicago or Illinois resident, the daily discount is significant (19.95 dollars for Chicago residents). Illinois residents have free admission on select hours scattered through the year; reserve those slots online with the small reservation fee or call to reserve free.
