Accessibility at a glance
| What | Details | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Step-free entrance | All park entrances are accessible. The four sides of the park (Michigan Avenue, Randolph Street, Monroe Street, Columbus Drive) each offer a step-free way in, and every entrance with a flight of stairs also has a paved ramp. The Welcome Center is at 201 East Randolph Street on the north side. | Confirmed accessible |
| Vertical access | The park is mostly level, but the BP Pedestrian Bridge to Maggie Daley Park has a gentle five percent grade, gentler than the ADA requires. The underground Millennium Garages (Grant Park North, Grant Park South, Millennium Park, Millennium Lakeside) have elevator access up to the park. The Pedway connects to the Cultural Center and other Loop buildings via elevator. | Confirmed accessible |
| Accessible toilets | Wheelchair-accessible restrooms are on the east and west sides of the Jay Pritzker Pavilion and at McCormick Tribune Plaza near the Park Grill. Use whichever is closest to your current location in the park. | Confirmed accessible |
| Companion entry | The park is free for everyone, so no companion ticket is needed. Pritzker Pavilion concerts during the Grant Park Music Festival and the Summer Film Series are also free; wheelchair seating with companion seating is set into the Seating Bowl, and additional wheelchair plus companion seats are around the perimeter. | Confirmed accessible |
Getting there
Millennium Park covers the block bordered by Michigan Avenue, Randolph Street, Monroe Street, and Columbus Drive, in the heart of the Chicago Loop. The Welcome Center is at 201 East Randolph Street on the north side. Most visitors arrive on foot from Michigan Avenue.
Washington/Wabash on the Brown, Orange, Pink, Purple, and Green lines is the closest fully accessible L station. Multiple CTA bus routes stop along Michigan Avenue and Randolph Street; nearly all are low-floor with ramps. Designated accessible parking is on Randolph Street to the north of the park.
Accessible parking is in the underground Millennium Garages (Grant Park North, Grant Park South, Millennium Park, Millennium Lakeside), each with elevators up to the park. The Lakeside entrance is the closest to the Pritzker Pavilion stage.
Cloud Gate and the central plaza
Cloud Gate, the polished steel sculpture known locally as The Bean, sits on AT and T Plaza in the Chase Promenades section of the park. The plaza is paved with smooth granite and is fully step-free from every direction. Visitors in wheelchairs can roll directly under the arch of the sculpture.
The Chase Promenades stretch north and south, wheelchair-friendly throughout. From AT and T Plaza, paved walkways lead west to Michigan Avenue, south to the Pritzker Pavilion, and east to the BP Pedestrian Bridge.
Crown Fountain, Pritzker Pavilion, and the BP Bridge
Crown Fountain on the south side of the park has two 50-foot glass-block towers that project faces, with a shallow black-granite reflecting pool between them. The pool is shallow throughout with no edge or rim, so a wheelchair user can roll into the water alongside other visitors. In the summer the fountain spits water from the projected faces, which is a draw for kids of every mobility level.
The Jay Pritzker Pavilion is Frank Gehry's open-air concert venue on the east side. The Seating Bowl holds 4,000 fixed seats with wheelchair seating set throughout, plus additional wheelchair-and-companion seating around the perimeter. The Great Lawn behind the seating holds another 7,000 on grass that meets ADA accessibility guidelines for surface stability.
The BP Pedestrian Bridge, also by Gehry, connects Millennium Park east to Maggie Daley Park across Columbus Drive. The bridge has a slope gentler than the ADA requires, with a curving brushed-steel deck. The bridge surface is solid and weatherproof; the only consideration is that the deck can be slick in heavy rain.
Programmes and access services
All movie screenings during the Millennium Park Summer Film Series include open captions. Grant Park Music Festival concerts at the Pritzker Pavilion are free and have accessible seating set into the Seating Bowl.
Complimentary wheelchairs are available from the Welcome Center at 201 East Randolph and from the Patron Services Center on the west walkway of the Pritzker Pavilion. Assistive listening devices for concerts are at the Patron Services Center. Service animals are welcome throughout.
Tips for visiting
Cloud Gate is busy from late morning to dusk. Sunrise visits give the best step-free photo angles without crowds. Crown Fountain attracts families with kids in the summer; if you want the sculpture without the splash, visit in spring or autumn or after dusk.
Combine Millennium Park with the adjacent Art Institute of Chicago: the Modern Wing entrance on East Monroe Street faces the park directly, and the Nichols Bridgeway from the park's south edge crosses Monroe Street into the museum step-free.
