Getting there
The Field Museum sits on Chicago's lakefront Museum Campus at 1400 South DuSable Lake Shore Drive, alongside Shedd Aquarium and Adler Planetarium. The Museum Campus is bordered on the west by McCormick Place and on the east by Lake Michigan.
Roosevelt is the closest CTA train stop, serving the Red, Orange, and Green lines. From Roosevelt, the museum is about a 10-minute roll east along the level Museum Campus path. Buses 146 (Inner Drive/Michigan Express/Museum Campus) and 130 (Museum Campus, mid-May through Labor Day only) serve the campus directly.
By car, take DuSable Lake Shore Drive to the McFetridge Drive exit. Wheelchair-accessible parking is first-come, first-served in the East Museum Lot. Paratransit and WAV taxis can drop off at the East entrance lane.
At the entrance
Enter at the East entrance on the ground level. The South entrance, the grand stair-flanked facade facing Soldier Field, is not the accessible route. The accessible East entrance opens directly onto a step-free lobby with the East elevator on hand.
Wheelchairs are available free at the entrance doors, on a first-come basis, sanitized between uses. Service animals are welcome in all public areas. If you want a sensory bag, stop at the Visitor Center on arrival.
Inside the museum
From the ground level, take the East or West elevator up to the main level, where Stanley Field Hall is the central rotunda. The upper level holds the Evolving Planet halls, where Sue the T. rex stands. Both upper floors are step-free with wide aisles.
Accessible restrooms are on every level, with an additional all-gender single-stall on the ground level near the West entrance. Specific exhibit access notes (such as crawl-through structures or steep ramps in the immersive halls) are best confirmed at the Visitor Center on arrival so staff can route you around any stair-only section.
Tours and accommodations
ASL-led Field Favorites tours run at 1 pm on the fourth Saturday of every month. Sensory bags are checked out free from the Visitor Center. The museum publishes sensory-friendly social narratives that you can read before your visit to know what to expect in the louder galleries (the children's exhibits and the Crown Family PlayLab on the lower level).
Trained service animals are welcome in all public areas. The accessibility team can be contacted ahead of a visit if you need a custom route, an interpreter, or other accommodations.
Tips for visiting
Buy timed entry online before arrival. Free Wednesdays for Illinois residents are crowded; aim for the morning or for a weekday outside the free schedule if you want quieter galleries. The museum closes at 5 pm with last entry at 4 pm.
Pace the visit if you tire easily. Stanley Field Hall, Evolving Planet, and the Hall of Gems are the three main draws and can be done in a focused 2 to 3 hours; the full ground level (Crown Family PlayLab, Underground Adventure) is a separate trip's worth.
