Getting there

The Art Institute sits on the east side of Michigan Avenue between Adams and Monroe, with two entrances. The Michigan Avenue entrance at 111 South Michigan is the lion-flanked historic facade. The Modern Wing entrance at 159 East Monroe Street opens onto Millennium Park and is the better arrival point for a wheelchair drop-off.

The Brown, Green, Orange, Pink, and Purple lines stop above ground at Adams/Wabash, one block west of the museum. The Red and Blue lines stop underground at Monroe, a few blocks away. Check the CTA's accessible station map before you travel because not every Loop L station has an elevator.

Accessible parking is in three nearby garages: Millennium Park Garage (entered from Columbus Drive and Monroe Street, with a 6 foot 8 inch clearance in some sections and an elevator at the exit), East Monroe Street Garage (same entry, 6 foot 8 inch clearance, exit ramps at Monroe Street), and Grant Park North Garage (entered from Michigan Avenue between Madison and Randolph, 6 foot 8 inch clearance for vans, elevator at the exit).

At the entrance

Both entrances open onto step-free lobbies with a checkroom. Free manual wheelchairs are available at both checkrooms with no reservation, on a first-come first-served basis. Personal wheelchairs, both manual and electric, are welcome throughout the museum.

Scooters, knee scooters, walkers, crutches, canes, and braces are all permitted. Hoverboards, Segways, tricycles, and carts are not. If you need a specific accommodation, email the museum's accessibility team at least two weeks before your visit so staff can plan a route or arrange interpreter support.

Inside the galleries

Elevators reach every public floor. Galleries are step-free with wide aisles between display cases. Designated wheelchair seating is set into every auditorium.

Visitors with low vision will find Braille on selected artwork labels and free TacTile sensory kits at the Ryan Learning Center, available Wednesday to Monday from 11 to 3. The official mobile app includes a Verbal Description Tour of collection highlights. Visitors who are deaf or have hearing loss can take an ASL-led gallery tour on the second Thursday or third Saturday of every month; free t-coil assistive listening devices are at the back of every auditorium.

Tips for visiting

Buy timed tickets online before arrival. Thursday evenings to 8 pm are quieter than the weekend. Members get the first hour of every open day from 10 to 11 to themselves. Tuesday is the only closed day.

The Art Institute is one of the bigger Chicago museum visits; pace it across two or three sessions if you tire easily. Service animals are welcome. The Modern Wing has a quieter atrium and a less-crowded cafe than the historic side, useful for breaks.
