London airports accessibility
Five airports serve London. Pre-book PRM assistance with your airline at least 48 hours before departure.
London is served by five international airports, more than any other European capital: Heathrow (LHR), Gatwick (LGW), Stansted (STN), Luton (LTN), and London City (LCY). Each is a separate operating company with its own PRM (Passenger with Reduced Mobility) service, its own terminal layout, and its own rail connection to central London. All five are regulated under EU PRM assistance rules retained in UK law post-Brexit and the UK Civil Aviation Authority's PRM Code of Practice, which together require free assistance pre-booked through the airline at least 48 hours before departure.
Heathrow is the largest UK airport and the principal hub for long-haul travel. Five terminals (1 was closed years ago, leaving T2, T3, T4, T5) sit roughly 25 km west of central London. Heathrow has dedicated assistance reception points at every terminal entrance, kerbside drop-off, and rail arrival hall, with a single PRM contractor (Wilson James) running the service across the airport. The Elizabeth Line provides step-free transfer from any Heathrow terminal to Paddington, Bond Street, Tottenham Court Road, and Liverpool Street in around 30 to 45 minutes for the standard fare. The Heathrow Express is the faster premium option (15 minutes to Paddington), step-free at the platforms.
Gatwick is the second-largest London airport, around 45 km south of central London, with two terminals (North and South) connected by an inter-terminal shuttle. The PRM service runs from a single assistance reception in each terminal, with kerbside meeting points and luggage support on arrival. The Gatwick Express to Victoria takes around 30 minutes and is step-free at both ends; Thameslink trains run direct from Gatwick to St Pancras International and London Bridge with step-free boarding on most new units.
Stansted sits around 60 km north-east of London in Essex, mainly used by Ryanair, easyJet, and other low-cost European carriers. The PRM service operates from a single airport assistance desk in the main terminal. The Stansted Express runs to Liverpool Street in around 50 minutes, step-free at both ends; the National Express coach to Victoria Coach Station is around 90 to 120 minutes. National Express low-floor coaches are accessible but coach travel is generally less convenient than rail for wheelchair users because storage of mobility equipment requires advance booking.
Luton is around 50 km north of central London in Bedfordshire, also used by easyJet, Ryanair, and TUI. The PRM service has a single reception point near the main entrance, and the Luton DART (Direct Air-Rail Transit) people-mover connects the terminal step-free to Luton Airport Parkway rail station. Thameslink trains from Luton Airport Parkway run to St Pancras International in around 25 minutes (step-free new units) and continue south through central London to Gatwick and Brighton.
London City (LCY) is the smallest London airport and the closest to central London, in the Docklands around 10 km east of the City. It is built on a single short runway between the Thames and the Royal Albert Dock, and is used by business carriers (British Airways, KLM, Lufthansa). The single terminal is step-free throughout, with the assistance desk in the main check-in hall. The Docklands Light Railway runs from London City Airport DLR station (a step-free platform on the south side of the terminal) to Canary Wharf in 10 minutes and Bank in around 20 minutes; DLR trains are step-free at every station on the line.
Service dogs travel free in the cabin on UK and EU carriers under the airline's standard service-animal terms and the IATA service-animal rules; UK-origin pets and service dogs travelling to the EU need an Animal Health Certificate (not an EU pet passport), the rabies vaccination certificate, and the airline's own service-animal form. The same paperwork applies on departure from any of the five London airports.
Picking the right airport. For long-haul, Heathrow is almost always the answer. For European low-cost (Ryanair, easyJet) the choice is between Stansted, Luton, and Gatwick depending on the specific route; rail connection to central London is fastest from Gatwick (Gatwick Express to Victoria, 30 min) and second-fastest from Stansted (Stansted Express to Liverpool Street, 50 min). For business travel into the City, London City Airport is unbeatable on transfer time despite its smaller route network. For a quiet, low-density terminal, London City is the easiest airport to navigate as a wheelchair user.
Detailed venue pages for each of the five airports, covering terminal-by-terminal layout, where the accessible toilets are, the lift-and-transfer protocol on departure, the location of the assistance reception, accessible parking, and the accessible transfer options to central London, are in the next pilot wave. The accessible-taxis guide covers the black-cab option from each airport rank (every black cab in London is legally wheelchair accessible); the public-transport guide covers the rail options into central London.
