Topkapı Palace wheelchair accessibility

Step-free outer courtyards, ramped approaches around the Imperial Council, and partial access to the Treasury and Harem rooms.

Topkapı Palace was the seat of Ottoman government from 1453 until Sultan Abdülmecid moved the imperial residence to Dolmabahçe. Four successive courtyards on Saray Burnu, plus a separately ticketed Harem.

For wheelchair users the news is mixed. The First and Second Courtyards are paved and gently graded. The Third Courtyard's Treasury, Privy Chamber, and Library have stepped thresholds and historic doorways. The Harem is partial access only.

Topkapı is administered by the National Palaces Administration. Disabled visitors with a Turkish Engelli Kimlik Kartı are reported to enter free with one companion; foreign disabled visitors are extended the courtesy at the till.

Overview

Begun by Mehmed II in 1459, Topkapı grew across four centuries of Ottoman rule into the present complex of courtyards, pavilions, kitchens, and Harem quarters. The Treasury holds the Topkapı Dagger and the Spoonmaker's Diamond. Wheelchair access is partial: outer courtyards step-free, inner rooms a mix.

Where to enter as a wheelchair user

Enter through the Imperial Gate (Bab-ı Hümayun) on Sultanahmet Square. The threshold is step-free into the First Courtyard. The ticket office and bag check are at the entrance to the Second Courtyard, reached step-free through the Gate of Salutation (Bab-üs Selâm) where stewards deploy a portable ramp. The Second Courtyard opens onto the broad paved expanse with the Imperial Council, the Tower of Justice, and the kitchens.

What you can see inside

The Imperial Council (where the divan met) is reached step-free via a ramp at the south side of the Second Courtyard. The Treasury has a small step that a steward can ramp on request. The kitchens are reached step-free along the long covered colonnade. The Third Courtyard's Audience Hall has historic stepped thresholds; the Privy Chamber's first room is step-free, deeper rooms involve steps. The Fourth Courtyard terrace is step-free with the Bosphorus view.

Toilets and rest stops

Accessible toilets are signed in the First Courtyard near Hagia Eirene and in the Second Courtyard near the kitchen complex. Benches and shaded colonnades line every courtyard. The Konyalı Restaurant on the Fourth Courtyard terrace has step-free outdoor seating with the Golden Horn view and an accessible toilet.

Tips for wheelchair visitors

Allow three to four hours; Topkapı covers seven football pitches of ground. Skip the Harem if budget or time is tight: it requires a separate ticket, is partially accessible, and the spectacular rooms are upstairs and unreachable from a chair. Visit in the morning. Topkapı opens at 09:00 and tour groups arrive from 10:00. Combine with Hagia Sophia and the Archaeological Museums, all within a 10-minute step-free roll on Saray Burnu.
