Dolmabahçe Palace wheelchair accessibility
Step-free entry to the Selâmlık state rooms, level routing through the Ceremonial Hall under the great chandelier, and partial access to the Harem.
Dolmabahçe Palace sits on the European Bosphorus shore in Beşiktaş, built 1843–1856 to replace Topkapı. The Ceremonial Hall under its 4.5-tonne crystal chandelier is the centrepiece. Atatürk died here in 1938.
For wheelchair users, Dolmabahçe is one of the more accessible historic palaces in Istanbul. The Selâmlık (state apartments) sits on a level main floor with step-free routing through the reception rooms. The Harem is partial-access only: ground-floor rooms are reachable, upstairs salons are not.
The palace is administered by the National Palaces Administration. Disabled visitors with a Turkish Engelli Kimlik Kartı are reported to enter free with one companion; foreign disabled visitors are extended the courtesy at the till with a home-country card and photo ID.

Overview
Dolmabahçe replaced Topkapı as the imperial residence in 1856. Six sultans lived here before the empire ended; Atatürk used it as a Bosphorus residence. The visit is in two parts: the Selâmlık (state apartments) and the separately ticketed Harem. Wheelchair access on the Selâmlık main floor is among the better palace experiences in Istanbul.
Where to enter as a wheelchair user
Enter through the Treasury Gate (Hazine Kapısı) on Dolmabahçe Caddesi, the visitor entrance for both halves. The gate is step-free onto a paved forecourt with ticket office, bag check, and benches. A short paved walk brings you to the Selâmlık entrance; its threshold has a low historic sill that stewards ramp on request.
What you can see inside
The Medhal Salon is the gilt entrance hall. The route then leads to the Crystal Staircase Hall, where the wheelchair bypass routes around the staircase itself (visible from the side). The Ambassadors' Hall is the principal reception room with Hereke carpets. The Ceremonial Hall is the centrepiece: a 4.5-tonne Bohemian crystal chandelier hangs from a 36-metre dome. From the Selâmlık the Harem ground-floor rooms are reachable; upstairs is not. Atatürk's bedroom (room 71) is on the Harem ground floor.
Toilets and rest stops
Accessible toilets are signed in the visitor services building near the Treasury Gate and near the cafeteria on the seafront. The guided route does not loop back, so plan a toilet stop before entering. The seafront cafeteria has step-free outdoor seating with a Bosphorus view.
How to get there
Tram: T1 terminates at Kabataş, a 7-minute paved roll along the seafront. F1 funicular from Taksim to Kabataş is step-free and lifted. Bus: 22, 22B, and 25E stop opposite the palace; newer buses have ramps. Ferry: Şehir Hatları Kabataş pier is 5 minutes away with crew-deployed ramps. Accessible taxi: drop on Dolmabahçe Caddesi at the Treasury Gate.
Tips for wheelchair visitors
Allow two hours for the Selâmlık, three hours with the Harem. The route runs at the group's pace; wheelchair users are typically placed at the front. Book the timed slot online and arrive 15 minutes early. Skip the Harem if step-free coverage matters most. Combine with a Bosphorus ferry from Kabataş, a 5-minute roll from the palace.
