Catedral de Málaga wheelchair accessibility
Step-free access to the main nave, why the cubiertas rooftop visit is not for wheelchair users, and how the free disabled admission works at the ticket office.
Catedral de Málaga is the unfinished Renaissance cathedral on Calle Molina Lario, known locally as La Manquita (the one-armed lady) because its south tower was never built. Standard fare is 10,00 euros. Free admission applies to personas con capacidades diferentes. The cubiertas (rooftop) visit is not wheelchair-accessible.
The accessible route into the cathedral runs through the south side door into the main nave. The nave itself is level on the stone paving and the high choir and side chapels are step-free. The cubiertas rooftop visit, which gives the long view over the old town and the port, is reached only by spiral stairs and the cathedral explicitly warns about stairs in the published policy.
The bell-tower north of the south facade was completed; the south tower was abandoned mid-construction and the cathedral kept the unfinished profile for over 200 years. The unfinished tower is part of the building's identity and a fixed visual reference point in the historic centre.
Getting there is straightforward. The cathedral sits one block south of Plaza de la Constitución at the centre of the old town. From Calle Larios the roll is under three minutes. From the Picasso the roll is under five minutes via Calle Cister. From the Muelle Uno port the roll is about eight minutes via Plaza de la Marina and Calle Cortina del Muelle.
Buy the cathedral-only ticket at 10,00 euros if you are a wheelchair user. The cubiertas rooftop is unreachable from the wheelchair-accessible route and the combined ticket includes a visit you cannot use.
Accessibility at a glance
| What | Details | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Step-free entrance via the south side door | Wheelchair users enter through the south side door of the cathedral, on Calle Molina Lario opposite the bishop's palace. The doorway is level with the pavement. The disabled-visitor ticket is issued at the ticket office at the south entrance, on production of disability documentation. | Confirmed accessible |
| Step-free across the main nave and side chapels | The main nave is level on the polished stone paving. The aisle around the high choir is step-free. The side chapels open off the main nave at the nave level. The Capilla de la Encarnación at the east end is reachable on the level. The high choir itself is raised on a low platform with a shallow step and a wheelchair user typically views it from the nave. | Partially confirmed |
| The cubiertas (rooftop) visit is not wheelchair-accessible | The cubiertas rooftop visit is reached only by long spiral stairs from the south aisle. The cathedral explicitly warns on the published tariff page that the cubiertas visit is not suitable for visitors who cannot climb stairs or move easily. Buy the cathedral-only ticket at 10,00 euros and skip the rooftop. The combined cubiertas-and-cathedral ticket adds the rooftop visit you cannot use. | Not accessible |
| Accessible toilets near the south entrance | Accessible toilets are signposted near the south entrance. The exact location is named at the ticket office on arrival. | Partially confirmed |
| Free admission for personas con capacidades diferentes | The published tariff page records free admission for personas con capacidades diferentes. The phrase appears in the same line as residents of Málaga and under-13s, with no specific percentage named on the published policy. In practice the same Spanish disability documentation (home-country disability ID plus doctor's letter naming the percentage) reads at the door. The published policy does not name a companion line, so a companion typically pays the standard 10,00 euro fare. | Confirmed accessible |

Entrance and the main nave
The south side door on Calle Molina Lario is the wheelchair-accessible entrance. The doorway is level with the pavement and the ticket office is immediately inside. Show the home-country disability ID and a doctor's letter on hospital letterhead at the ticket office. The disabled-visitor ticket is free; the published policy lumps it together with Málaga residents and under-13s under the gratuita line.
The main nave is level on the polished stone paving and the aisle around the high choir is step-free. The side chapels open off the main nave at the nave level. The Capilla de la Encarnación at the east end is reachable on the level. The high choir itself is raised on a low platform with a shallow step.
The cathedral organ at the west end is one of the largest in Andalucía and is heard on Sunday afternoons. The audio guide is in Spanish, English, French, and Italian; pick up a handset at the ticket office.
Accessible toilets
Accessible toilets are signposted near the south entrance. The exact location is named at the ticket office on arrival.
The nearest larger accessible facility outside the cathedral is in the Plaza de la Constitución area at the foot of Calle Larios, about a three-minute roll from the south entrance.

Opening hours: Monday to Friday 10:30 to 18:30. Saturdays and Sundays open shorter hours with a midday closure for cathedral services. Verify the exact day-of opening on the published tariff page or at the south entrance ticket office.
Documentation for the free disabled admission: a home-country national disability ID, a recent doctor's letter on hospital letterhead naming the equivalent percentage, and your passport. The published policy does not name a free companion line, so a companion typically pays the standard fare.
Tips
Skip the cubiertas rooftop visit if you use a wheelchair. The cathedral warns explicitly that the rooftop visit is not suitable for visitors who cannot climb stairs. The rooftop is one of the headline views of the city but it is reached only by long spiral stairs from the south aisle.
Visit before noon Monday to Friday for the quietest experience. The cathedral fills up in the afternoon, particularly in spring and autumn. Sunday morning is reserved for services and the visitor circuit is partially closed.
Combine the cathedral visit with the Picasso five minutes east on Calle San Agustín and the Carmen Thyssen three minutes north on Calle Compañía. The three sites are within a 15-minute walking radius of each other.
Quick facts
Construction began in 1528 on the site of the Aljama mosque after the Reconquest of Málaga. The interior was largely completed in the 17th century. The north bell-tower was finished in the late 18th century; the south tower was abandoned mid-construction and the cathedral kept the unfinished profile, earning the nickname La Manquita. The high choir holds 17th-century carved choir stalls by Pedro de Mena.
