War Memorial of Korea wheelchair accessibility
Free admission for all visitors, step-free entrance from the front plaza, lifts on every floor, and an outdoor military hardware exhibit on level ground.
The War Memorial of Korea is the national museum of military history, on a large landscaped site in Yongsan-gu. It opened in 1994 and combines indoor halls (covering Korean military history from prehistory through the Korean War) with an outdoor exhibit of more than 150 aircraft, tanks, ships, and missiles.
For wheelchair users this is one of the easier large attractions in Seoul. Admission is free for everyone, the main building is fully accessible, and the outdoor hardware exhibit is on level paved ground. Samgakji Station on Seoul Metro lines 4 and 6 is a short level walk from the front entrance.

Overview
The War Memorial of Korea was conceived in the early 1990s as a national centre to commemorate the Korean War (1950-53) and the broader history of Korean military affairs. The site covers around 50,000 square metres and includes the main exhibition building, the Memorial Halls with names of those killed in the Korean War, a chapel, and a large outdoor exhibit of military hardware.
The main building has six exhibition halls: Memorial Hall, War History Hall, Korean War Hall, Expeditionary Forces Hall, Republic of Korea Armed Forces Hall, and Donations Hall. The route through them is broadly chronological and most visitors plan two to three hours for the full tour.
Where to enter as a wheelchair user
Use the south main entrance opposite Samgakji Station. The pavement from Samgakji exit 12 is level and runs directly to the front plaza. The plaza approach is fully step-free, and the main glass doors at the south entrance are automatic and at grade.
The east side entrance from Itaewon is also step-free but a longer walk from any subway stop. Use the south entrance for the shortest accessible route.
Plan a route through the galleries
The recommended accessible route is: ground floor (Memorial Hall, War History Hall), lift to level 1 (Korean War Hall, Expeditionary Forces Hall), lift to level 2 (Republic of Korea Armed Forces Hall, Donations Hall). Each hall is a clear loop and the lifts are signed at both ends.
The Korean War Hall is the largest single hall and the centrepiece of the memorial. Plan an hour for this hall alone if you read the panels carefully; faster visits skip the donation cases on level 2.
The outdoor military hardware exhibit
The outdoor exhibit covers more than 150 large items including K-class destroyers, B-52 bombers, F-86 Sabres, and a range of artillery and armoured vehicles. The exhibit is laid out on a large paved plaza on the east side of the building and is fully step-free.
Some larger aircraft and ships are entered by a short flight of steps and are not wheelchair accessible inside; the exterior viewing platforms are step-free and signed. Allow an hour for the outdoor exhibit on a sunny day.
Toilets, rest stops, and the cafe
Accessible toilets are on every floor and at the outdoor cafe pavilion. The main cafe is on the ground floor of the south wing and has step-free entry and standard cafe tables. The smaller cafe at the outdoor exhibit has terrace seating with step-free access.
Rest seats are spread along the main loop in each hall, and the central atrium has a long bench with views of the outdoor exhibit. The memorial's gardens around the building are step-free with shaded paths.
How to get there
Subway: Seoul Metro lines 4 and 6, Samgakji Station, exit 12 (lift to surface, direct walk to the south plaza). Alternative: line 4, Sookmyung Women's University Station, exit 10, a level seven-minute walk west.
Accessible taxi: drop at the front plaza on Itaewon-ro. The plaza has wide pedestrian space and a level approach to the main entrance.
Bus: many low-floor city buses stop on Itaewon-ro near the memorial; check the Seoul Danurim portal for the nearest stop.
Tips for wheelchair visitors
Go on a weekday. The memorial is busy on weekends with school groups and family visits in spring and autumn; weekday mornings are calm and the main halls have room to manoeuvre.
Borrow a chair for the outdoor exhibit. The outdoor plaza is a long stretch of polished paving and a loan chair makes the second half of the visit comfortable even if you usually walk.
Combine with the National Museum of Korea. The two are a short step-free metro ride apart via line 4 (Samgakji to Ichon). A morning at the War Memorial plus an afternoon at the National Museum is a comfortable day.
