Overview

The Staatsgalerie Stuttgart is the state art collection of Baden-Württemberg, spanning eight centuries from medieval panel painting to twentieth-century modernism. The complex grew across three buildings: the original neoclassical Alte Staatsgalerie of 1843, the James Stirling postmodern extension of 1984 (the Stirling Bau), and the Sammlung Steegmann annex.

The Stirling Bau is one of the landmark accessibility-aware postmodern buildings in Europe, deliberately routing every visitor through a step-free terrace rather than monumental stairs. For a wheelchair visitor, the entrance you use is the same one every other visitor uses.

Where to enter and what to expect at the desk

The accessible approach is via the terrace path on the Konrad-Adenauer-Straße side. The terrace rises gently from the pavement; the Stirling Bau's iconic curved ramp is the route every visitor takes. The entrance itself is level once you reach the terrace.

At the cloakroom and ticket counter, present your disability pass. The cashier issues a reduced ticket and a free companion ticket when the pass carries the accompanying-person mark. The desk processes wheelchair loan if you have not pre-booked.

Moving between galleries

The three buildings are linked internally at multiple floor levels by lifts, so you do not need to exit and re-enter to switch between collections. The Stirling Bau galleries are step-free with smooth concrete floors; the Alte Staatsgalerie's older parquet floors are level but vary in texture.

The rotunda at the heart of the Stirling Bau is the natural rest point between wings. Benches sit around the perimeter; the natural light from the oculus above makes it a comfortable pause point.

Toilets and rest stops

The accessible toilet is on the ground floor of the Alte Staatsgalerie. Use it before going upstairs because it is the only accessible facility inside the building.

The museum cafe inside the Stirling Bau has step-free access. Outside, the Schillerplatz and Schlossplatz are five minutes north on step-free pavements.

How to get there

Stadtbahn: Staatsgalerie (lines U1, U2, U4, U9, U14) stops directly in front of the museum with level boarding. The platform-to-museum pavement is smooth and step-free.

Bus: city bus routes serve the Schillerplatz five minutes north, with low-floor vehicles and a fold-out ramp at the second door.

Accessible taxi: drop directly at the terrace entrance on Konrad-Adenauer-Straße. Limited disabled parking is available on Urbanstraße south of the museum.

Tips for wheelchair visitors

Visit on a Wednesday for free admission, but expect higher traffic than other weekdays. The Thursday late opening to 19:30 is the quietest window for a slow visit.

Reserve a loan chair by email to barrierefrei@staatsgalerie.bwl.de a day or two in advance, especially in summer when school groups draw down the foyer stock.
