Overview
Schloss Solitude is described by the Württemberg state palace administration as Duke Carl Eugen's most ambitious and personal Rococo creation. The palace sits on a long ridge between Stuttgart and Leonberg, on a terrace chosen for its view back toward his other residences. The complex includes the central palace, two cavalier wings, and a formal terrace garden.
For a wheelchair visitor, the gardens are the strongest part of the offer: the terraced layout is flat across each ridge level, paths are wide, and the forecourt opens onto a long view over the Glemswald forest. The interior tour is more variable.
What you can see in the palace and gardens
The standard tour covers the principal-floor rooms: the Weisser Saal, the Marmorsaal, and the Duke's private apartments. The Rococo decoration is the highlight, with painted ceilings, gilded stucco, and original eighteenth-century furniture in the state rooms.
The gardens are free year-round and step-free along the main terrace. The formal parterre directly in front of the palace is the most accessible; the wider Glemswald forest paths beyond are gravel and vary in surface quality.
Discounts and access cards
Standard guided tour is 7 EUR; reduced 3,50 EUR for visitors with a disability rating of 50 or higher. The StuttCard grants free standard entry; the Erlebniscard adds a complimentary standard tour. Children from age 6 and groups of 20 or more book at the reduced rate.
Special tours run at 10 EUR standard and 5 EUR reduced. Family tickets at 17,50 EUR standard or 25 EUR for the special tour cover two adults and their children.
How to get there
Bus: line 92 from Stuttgart-West (Vogelsang stop on the U2/U9 Stadtbahn) to the Schloss Solitude terminus. Low-floor bus with a fold-out ramp. The terminus is on the forecourt level with the palace.
Car: parking is at the forecourt with disabled bays near the terrace entrance.
Accessible taxi: a return-trip taxi is the simplest option outside the bus 92 timetable.
Tips for wheelchair visitors
Visit on a clear day for the view over the Glemswald forest from the terrace. The gardens carry the visit even if the interior tour proves too narrow for your chair.
Call the visitor office in advance to describe your chair and ask whether the principal-floor route works for you. Staff can also direct you to the most level garden paths if the tour is not feasible.
