Overview

The Landesmuseum Württemberg is the state museum of Baden-Württemberg's cultural history. It traces a thousand years of regional history from medieval grave goods through Renaissance court collections to the industrial age. The museum sits inside the Altes Schloss, a Renaissance castle built between 1553 and 1578.

For a wheelchair visitor, the Altes Schloss has been retrofitted carefully: two lifts, step-free internal routes, two free wheelchairs at the door, and an accessible toilet on the ground floor. The trade-off is that the cellar and crypt remain inaccessible.

Where to enter and what is inside

The accessible entrance is on the Schillerplatz side, with a level threshold to the entrance hall. Beyond it, the visitor lobby is on one level with the ticket counter, the cloakroom, and the wheelchair loan store.

From the lobby, two lifts take you to the upper exhibition floors. The Renaissance courtyard is open to the sky and is the natural anchor between gallery wings. Floor surfaces alternate between smooth stone and short-pile carpet but no thresholds.

What you can and cannot see

The main exhibitions on the upper floors are step-free: the medieval and Renaissance collections, the regional history galleries, and the Haus der Musik wing. The Haus der Musik is free admission and has its own accessible entrance.

The cellar and crypt below the Altes Schloss are not accessible. The cellar holds the medieval tomb-fragment collection; the crypt holds the Württemberg ducal sarcophagi. The rest of the building still tells the regional story coherently.

Specialised tours and accessibility programs

The museum offers free touch tours for visually impaired visitors with tactile models. German Sign Language tours run with interpreters on published dates. Mobile induction loops are available for hearing-aid users at events and group tours. Noise-cancelling headphones are available free of charge.

Toilets and rest stops

The accessible toilet is on the ground floor, signed with the wheelchair symbol from the lobby. Standard toilets exist on the upper floors but the accessible facility is on the entrance level only. The museum cafe is accessible from the lobby with step-free seating.

How to get there

Stadtbahn: Schlossplatz (multiple lines) is the nearest stop, three minutes north on step-free pavement. Charlottenplatz to the east is also a short level roll.

Bus: city bus routes serve the Schillerplatz with low-floor vehicles and a fold-out ramp at the second door.

Accessible taxi: drop on the Schillerplatz at the museum entrance.

Tips for wheelchair visitors

Book a group visit at least a week ahead by email if travelling with a disability association. Free admission for the group requires advance registration.

Reserve a wheelchair loan informally by calling 0711 89 535 111 the day before, especially on busy summer weekends.
