Overview

The Fernsehturm Stuttgart was placed in service on 5 February 1956 and stands 216,61 m tall on the Hoher Bopser, a forested hill at 483 m in the Degerloch district. It was the world's first telecommunications tower built from reinforced concrete and became the model for every TV tower that followed.

For a wheelchair visitor, the tower's only viewing route is the lift. There are no stairs to climb because the building was designed lift-first; the experience for a chair user matches the experience for any other visitor.

Where to enter and how to ride up

The base building is reachable from the Jahnstraße parking lot or from the Stadtbahn stop Ruhbank on a short level pavement. The entrance opens onto a single-level lobby with the ticket counter on one side and the lift on the other.

Present your ticket at the lift gate. The lift runs at 5 m/s and reaches the observation deck in about 35 seconds. Cars are large enough for a chair and one or two standing passengers.

What the observation decks offer

The lower deck sits at 150 m and is enclosed with full-height windows. The upper deck at 153,5 m is the Panorama-Café, with table seating, a small menu, and the same window views. The cafe is reachable from the lower deck by an internal staircase.

From either deck, you see across the Stuttgart valley to the central city, north over the vineyards toward the Killesberg, and on clear days east toward the Swabian Alb.

Toilets and rest stops

An accessible toilet is on the base level. Whether an accessible toilet exists on the upper decks was not stated on the official website; confirm with the staff before going up if you cannot use a standard toilet.

How to get there

Stadtbahn: lines U7 and U8 to Ruhbank (Fernsehturm), five minutes on level pavement to the base. The Stadtbahn boards level on straight track.

Car: parking at the base on Jahnstraße with disabled bays close to the entrance.

Accessible taxi: drop directly at the base entrance.

Tips for wheelchair visitors

Visit at sunset for the panorama and again after dark for the city lights. Buy the ticket online in advance to skip the lobby queue on summer evenings.

Confirm the toilet provision on the upper deck before riding up if you cannot use a standard toilet, since the public sources do not state it.
