Stuttgart wheelchair accessibility guide
Level-boarding Stadtbahn, ramp-equipped buses, and museums that admit a companion free with a disability pass.
Stuttgart's centre is flatter than its valley reputation suggests. The Stadtbahn boards level on most lines with at most a 7 cm gap, buses carry fold-out ramps, and the major museums (Staatsgalerie, Landesmuseum, Kunstmuseum) admit a registered companion free when the disabled visitor's German pass carries the accompanying-person mark.
Plan around the geography: the valley sides are steep, so reach the Fernsehturm or the Wilhelma by Stadtbahn rather than on foot. The central Schlossplatz to Königstraße spine is the easiest stretch for a long roll.
Getting around: Stadtbahn, buses, S-Bahn
The SSB Stadtbahn is the backbone for visitors. Trains board level with at most a 7 cm horizontal gap and 6 cm vertical step on straight track, so platforms work for both manual and powered chairs. The wheelchair symbol on the platform marks the widest-door stopping point.
City buses are low-floor across the network with a fold-out ramp at the second door. Press the blue-bordered yellow button marked with the wheelchair symbol and the driver lowers the bus and deploys the ramp. Many stops have an 18 cm specialty curb.
The S-Bahn run by DB is the fastest way out to Bad Cannstatt (for the Wilhelma) and the airport. Stations vary in step-free coverage. Check before you travel and request boarding assistance from DB's mobility service if your station is not on the step-free list.
Five attractions to plan around
The Staatsgalerie Stuttgart is the flagship art museum: step-free terrace approach, lifts to every floor, free wheelchair loan on email request, and free admission for a registered companion.
The Landesmuseum Württemberg sits inside the Altes Schloss on the Schillerplatz. Two free wheelchairs wait at the door, lifts cover most exhibition floors, and an accessible toilet is on the ground level. The cellar and crypt are not accessible.
The Fernsehturm Stuttgart on the Hoher Bopser hill is the world's first reinforced-concrete television tower. A lift runs from the base to the lower observation deck at 150 m, and a companion enters free with the visitor's disability pass.
Schloss Solitude is the Rococo summer palace west of the city. Standard tour is €7,00 and reduced for visitors with a 50-percent disability rating is €3,50; the StuttCard grants free standard entry.
The Mercedes-Benz Museum on Mercedesstraße uses a double-helix design that takes every visitor up by lift and lets them descend through the exhibition, which is naturally favourable for wheelchair users.
Discounts and the registered-companion rule
Major Stuttgart museums and the Fernsehturm follow one pattern: reduced admission for disabled visitors and free entry for a registered companion when the visitor's pass carries the accompanying-person mark. The Staatsgalerie states this directly. See the Stuttgart disability discounts page for the per-venue breakdown.
Hills and routes to avoid
Stuttgart's centre is flat, but the city walls climb steeply on three sides. The Hoher Bopser, the Killesberg park, and the Karlshöhe vineyards all involve sustained climbs uncomfortable for a manual chair. Reach high-point destinations by Stadtbahn or accessible taxi.
The Schlossplatz to Königstraße pedestrian spine is the easiest long roll. Most pavements are smooth stone with dropped kerbs at every crossing. The Schillerplatz, Marktplatz, and Markthalle connect to Königstraße on step-free routes.
Quick facts
Stadtbahn: level boarding on straight track, max 7 cm gap. Buses: fold-out ramp, yellow request button. Major museums: reduced admission, registered companion free. Best step-free area: Schlossplatz to Schillerplatz to Königstraße. Steep climbs: Stadtbahn or accessible taxi.
