Disability discounts in Leipzig

Free LVB transit, free companion at the Gewandhaus and Panometer, reduced admission at the major Leipzig museums.

The single most useful rule for a wheelchair visitor to Leipzig: free travel on every LVB tram, bus, and S-Bahn with a German disability pass plus token, and a free companion on transit when the pass carries the accompanying-person mark. At museums, the disabled visitor pays a reduced rate; the companion-free rule varies by venue, so ask at the counter.

How the registered-companion rule works

Germany runs a national disability-pass scheme. When the pass carries the accompanying-person mark, the law guarantees free travel for one companion on every public-transport network. For museum and monument admission the picture is patchier: some venues publish a free-companion policy, others do not. Ask at every counter.

Venues in Leipzig where the policy is published on the operator's own site: the Panometer (one adult companion free with the accompanying-person mark) and the Gewandhaus (free companion seat for every event). At other venues, present the pass at the ticket counter and ask before queuing.

Free travel on LVB trams and buses

The most useful discount is on transit. A German disability pass with the orange free-travel token gives free travel on every LVB tram, bus, regional S-Bahn, and Flexa shuttle. The companion travels free when the pass carries the accompanying-person mark.

Present the pass and the token to the driver or to a ticket inspector. The Sächsische Mobil-Card and other regional tickets do not replace this entitlement; the free-travel right is the default.

When the discount does not apply

Foreign disability cards are not consistently accepted in Germany. The European Disability Card is accepted at federal venues but not always at state-run sites. Bring a translated copy of your home-country documentation and ask at the counter before queuing.

Public squares (Augustusplatz, Marktplatz, Naschmarkt) and the Auwald park charge no admission, so the discount question does not arise. The Hauptbahnhof shopping floor is free to enter as well.
