Step-free main entrance and paths
The main entrance on Pfaffendorfer Straße is level. All main paths around the zoo are paved and barrier-free, so a wheelchair or buggy rolls through the full route without backtracking. Wide paths and ramps are signed throughout, including at the headline viewing windows that drop to ground level.
Confirmed accessible
Lifts in the elephant temple and Gondwanaland
The elephant temple has a free-of-charge lift to the upper viewing gallery, which gives the best angle on the herd. Gondwanaland's tropical hall has a separate lift to a viewing platform from which the canopy is visible. The canopy walk itself, with its suspension bridges, is not wheelchair accessible.
Confirmed accessible
Accessible toilets at multiple points
Accessible toilets sit at several points across the zoo, including the restaurant buildings and the main entrance complex. The exact locations are marked on the printed zoo map (Zooplan). Plan around them for a long visit because the zoo grounds cover twenty-seven hectares.
Confirmed accessible
Free wheelchair loan with a 10 EUR deposit
Loan wheelchairs are free against a ten-euro cash deposit at the entrance. Stock is limited, so call (0341) 5933 385 a day or two ahead in busy summer weeks. The deposit is returned when the chair comes back.
Confirmed accessible
Reduced admission at the safari office
Standard adult admission is twenty-six euros in peak season starting in 2026 with the opening of Feuerland. Visitors with a German disability pass pay a reduced rate at the safari office and skip the main queue. The Zoo's own accessibility page does not publish a free-companion policy; ask at the safari office about companion entry on arrival.
Partially confirmed
Wheelchair-accessible Gondwanaland boat trip
The river safari boat through the Gondwanaland tropical hall is wheelchair accessible. Boarding is at the Gondwanaland dock with staff assistance. The trip is the easiest way to see the rainforest canopy at eye level since the canopy walk itself is not accessible.
Confirmed accessible
Disabled parking in covered garages
Disabled parking spaces are in the zoo's covered garages on Pfaffendorfer Straße. Spaces are signed and lift-served. The walk to the entrance is short and level.
Confirmed accessible
Tram access
The Zoo Leipzig stop on Pfaffendorfer Straße is served by LVB trams with level boarding on rebuilt platforms. The walk from the platform to the main gate is two minutes on a flat, smooth pavement.

Overview

Zoo Leipzig is the oldest zoo in Germany, founded in 1878, and the modern incarnation is one of the most ambitious in central Europe. The grounds cover twenty-seven hectares and are organised into six themed worlds: Pongoland for the great apes, Gondwanaland for the southern-continents rainforest, the Kiwara Savanne for African plains, Asia, the elephant temple, and the historic founder's garden.

For a wheelchair visitor, the design reads accessible. The headline viewing windows on the great-ape, big-cat, and elephant enclosures drop to ground level, so the eye line works for both standing and seated visitors. The main loop is one continuous step-free path.

Where to enter and what to expect at the desk

The main entrance is on Pfaffendorfer Straße. Visitors with a German disability pass go directly to the safari office desk, where the reduced ticket is issued on the spot. Skip the main queue. Ask at the same desk about companion entry; the zoo's published accessibility page does not state the policy.

If you have not pre-booked a loan wheelchair, ask at the safari office. The chairs are stored behind the counter and the deposit is taken in cash.

Moving through the zoo

The main loop is paved with smooth asphalt and is step-free across the full route. The themed worlds are connected by gentle ramps; you do not need to retrace your steps to switch between Pongoland, Gondwanaland, and the Kiwara Savanne.

The lift in the elephant temple climbs to the upper viewing balcony, which gives the cleanest sight line on the herd. The lift in Gondwanaland reaches a viewing platform from which the rainforest canopy is visible. The canopy walk itself with its suspension bridges is not accessible; the viewing platform is the alternative.

Toilets, food, and rest stops

Accessible toilets are signed at multiple points across the zoo, including the restaurants. Plan around the next one before any long stretch.

The Hacienda Las Casas restaurant in Gondwanaland, the Patakan restaurant near Pongoland, and the safari café near the main entrance all have step-free seating and accessible toilets. The boat-trip docks are signed from the Gondwanaland entrance.

How to get there

Tram: Zoo Leipzig stop on Pfaffendorfer Straße is served by multiple LVB lines. Trams are low-floor and platforms are raised, so boarding is level. The walk from the platform to the main entrance is two minutes on a flat pavement.

Bus: city buses run along Pfaffendorfer Straße with the same stop. Low-floor buses deploy a fold-out ramp from the second door on request.

Car: disabled parking is in the covered garages next to the entrance. The garages are signed from the Leipzig Ring road.

Tips for wheelchair visitors

Arrive at opening time on summer weekends. The safari office moves faster early and loan wheelchair stock is highest before ten.

For Gondwanaland in detail, plan the boat trip on the way in and the lift to the viewing platform on the way out. Skip the canopy walk.
