Overview

The Völkerschlachtdenkmal commemorates the 1813 Battle of the Nations, in which a coalition of Prussian, Russian, Austrian, and Swedish forces defeated Napoleon. The monument was inaugurated on the battle's centenary in 1913 after fifteen years of construction. It stands ninety-one metres high and is one of the largest monuments in Europe.

For a wheelchair visitor, the building rewards the trip. The base, the Hall of Fame, and the inner gallery are all lift-served. The crypt with its eight life-size warrior figures is on the lift route. The summit platform with its three-hundred-and-sixty degree view is not accessible, but the middle platform reached by lift gives the same panorama for less effort.

Where to enter and what to expect at the desk

The accessible approach is via the ramp from the visitor car park to the left of the main staircase. A second route reaches the grounds from the Tabaksmühle side. The ticket counter sits inside the base.

At the counter, present your German disability pass for the reduced rate. The cashier does not require advance notice; the lift access is part of the standard accessible route signed from the entrance.

Going up: the lift route

The lift in the base reaches the Singers' Gallery via the Michaels-Plateau. From the Singers' Gallery, a second lift continues to the inner gallery at forty-seven metres. The inner gallery wraps the rotunda and gives the first sweeping view inward. A further lift section reaches the middle viewing platform.

The final summit platform at ninety-one metres is stairs only. If you can transfer to climb a flight, the steps are wide; if not, the middle platform is the destination. The view from the middle platform takes in the centre of Leipzig and the surrounding plain.

Toilets and rest stops

The accessible toilet is in the base near the lift entrance. Use it before going up; there is no second accessible facility on the upper levels. The park restaurant opposite the visitor entrance is step-free and has a standard accessible toilet.

The benches around the Lake of Tears of the Dead in the rotunda are a natural rest stop. The acoustics carry; the rotunda is quiet enough to hear footsteps and water.

How to get there

Tram: line 15 calls at Völkerschlachtdenkmal. The platform is raised and trams are low-floor, so boarding is level. The walk from the platform to the visitor entrance is two minutes on a flat pavement.

S-Bahn: lines S1, S2, and S3 stop at the same name. The station forecourt is level and signed to the monument.

Car: free disabled parking is in the visitor car park south of the monument. The car park is signed from the Ring road.
