Disability discounts in Hamburg

Which tickets are reduced, where the companion enters free, and what proof to bring.

Hamburg follows the federal SGB IX framework: disabled visitors (Schwerbehinderte in German) with a German disability pass (Schwerbehindertenausweis) or a recognised equivalent pay the reduced admission at most public venues, and one companion enters free where the card carries the companion mark on the pass (Merkzeichen B). Visitors use the European Disability Card or a home-country equivalent in place of the German pass.

The framework: SGB IX and the German disability pass

Disability rights in Germany sit under SGB IX. Residents hold the German disability pass; visitors use the European Disability Card or a home-country equivalent. The companion mark on the pass unlocks the free-companion benefit at most Hamburg venues.

Hamburger Kunsthalle

Severely disabled visitors pay 9 EUR (standard 18 EUR). One companion enters free. Present your disability card at the desk. All three buildings are step-free with lifts; free wheelchair loan at the entrance.

Miniatur Wunderland

Wheelchair users pay 10 EUR (standard 22 EUR). Other disabled visitors aged 16 and over, plus their companions, pay the reduced rate of 19 EUR. The entire exhibition is wheelchair-accessible across both buildings.

Elbphilharmonie

The Plaza on the 8th floor is free to visit: walk-in remainders are issued at no charge at the on-site box office. To guarantee entry, pre-book a timed ticket for €3 per person (€2 for groups of 10 or more). Lifts bypass the Welle escalator so wheelchair users reach the Plaza step-free. Wheelchair spaces in all three concert halls are bookable through the box office; contact the box office for companion seating.

SHMH museums and Tierpark Hagenbeck

SHMH venues (Museum fur Hamburgische Geschichte, Altonaer Museum, and others) apply the standard German museum reduced tariff for disabled visitors; companion policy follows the companion mark on the pass. Hagenbeck Zoo pricing is not confirmed publicly; contact the zoo before visiting.

HVV public transport

German disability pass holders with the relevant mobility marks and a valid annual travel token (Wertmarke) travel free on U-Bahn, S-Bahn, buses, and harbour ferries. Where the pass carries the companion mark, one companion also travels free. This is a residents-only benefit; visitors pay standard HVV fares.

Documentation to bring

Bring photo ID and your disability card. Ask for the reduced rate when buying tickets. A doctor's letter on letterhead (within 12 months) is a useful backup for venues less familiar with foreign cards.
