Lifts connecting the three buildings on all floors
Multiple passenger lifts serve the three buildings (the 1869 main building, the Kuppelsaal annexe, and the 1997 Galerie der Gegenwart). The historic main building's exterior staircase is served by a dedicated lift that connects street level directly to the main entrance door. Internal lifts connect floors within each building and the covered internal link between buildings.

Free wheelchair loan at the entrance desk
The Hamburger Kunsthalle loans wheelchairs free of charge at the entrance. The service is listed on the accessibility page. If you need a chair, ask at the main entrance desk on arrival; stock is limited, so arriving early on busy days is advisable. The loan covers your entire visit.

Accessible toilets with alarm systems in two buildings
Specially equipped disabled toilets with alarm systems (Notrufanlage) are available in two locations: the Lichtwark-Galerie (part of the historic main building) and the Galerie der Gegenwart (the contemporary art wing). Both are signed with the wheelchair symbol. Ask a staff member for directions to the nearest accessible toilet from your current location.
Confirmed accessible
9 EUR reduced ticket; one companion free
Disabled visitors pay the reduced admission of 9 EUR, compared to the 18 EUR standard ticket. One companion enters free of charge. The reduced category also applies to students, trainees, unemployed visitors, and social assistance recipients. Present your disability card or recognised equivalent at the desk; the rate is applied on the spot.

All four S-Bahn lines, the U1, U2, U3, and U4 serve Hauptbahnhof with lifts. Regional and intercity trains also stop at Hauptbahnhof. No other transport connection to the Kunsthalle is needed if you arrive by train.

Overview

The Hamburger Kunsthalle opened in 1869 and was extended with the Kuppelsaal in 1921 and the Galerie der Gegenwart in 1997. The three buildings are internally connected and share a single entrance. The collection spans old masters, 19th-century German Romanticism, impressionism, and contemporary works.

Its biggest accessibility advantage is its location directly beside Hamburg Hauptbahnhof, the easiest major art museum in Germany to reach step-free by rail.

How to enter and get around

From Hauptbahnhof (Kirchenallee exit), the step-free route along Glockengiesserwall to the museum entrance takes about 3 minutes. The historic main building's exterior staircase has a facade lift leading directly to the motorised main entrance door. The Galerie der Gegenwart also has a step-free entrance from the Ferdinandstor side (accessible parking spaces are here).

All collection and exhibition spaces, event rooms, and the cafe are step-free. Doors provide sufficient width for a wheelchair; steps and thresholds are levelled. Internal lifts connect all three buildings on all floors.

Staff at the entrance handle the wheelchair loan, reduced-rate ticket, and companion ticket in a single transaction. Present your disability card when buying.

Accessible toilets

Two accessible toilets with alarm systems are in the museum: one in the Lichtwark-Galerie (main historic building, ground floor) and one in the Galerie der Gegenwart. Both are signed with the wheelchair symbol. Ask staff if you need directions.

Tickets and pricing

Standard ticket: 18 EUR. Reduced (disabled visitors, students, trainees, unemployed): 9 EUR. Companion for a disabled visitor: free. Under 18: free.

The museum is free for all visitors on the first Thursday of each month, 18-21h. Arrive early on those evenings; the contemporary and impressionist galleries fill quickly.

Getting there and parking

All S-Bahn lines and U1, U2, U3, U4 serve Hauptbahnhof with step-free lifts. By car, two free disabled parking spaces are at the Ferdinandstor delivery entrance. The underground garage beneath the Galerie der Gegenwart accepts paid parking (max height 1.95 m); a step-free lift reaches the Galerie der Gegenwart entrance from the garage.
