Elbphilharmonie wheelchair accessibility

Barrier-free throughout. Lifts bypass the Welle escalator to the Plaza (free on the day). Wheelchair spaces in all concert halls.

The Elbphilharmonie is Hamburg's landmark concert hall and the defining piece of architecture in the HafenCity waterfront development. Built on top of a 1960s warehouse and opened in 2017, it houses three concert halls, a hotel, and the Plaza on the 8th floor with panoramic views over the Elbe harbour.

The Plaza on the 8th floor is free to visit: walk-in remainders are handed out at no charge at the on-site box office. If you want to guarantee entry, a pre-booked timed ticket costs €3 per person. Lifts bypass the Welle escalator so wheelchair users reach the Plaza without using the escalator. Wheelchair spaces in every concert hall are bookable through the box office.

Overview

The Elbphilharmonie opened in January 2017, designed by Herzog and de Meuron on top of the Kaispeicher B warehouse in HafenCity. It contains three concert halls: the Grand Hall (Grosser Saal, capacity 2,100), the Recital Hall (Kleiner Saal, up to 550), and the Kaistudio 1 (capacity 150). The 8th-floor Plaza wraps around the building with panoramic harbour views.

The building was designed barrier-free from the start. Lifts run the full vertical circulation alongside the Welle escalator.

The Welle and the lift: reaching the Plaza

The Welle is the long curved escalator in a glass tube from lobby to Plaza (about 3 minutes). Wheelchair users use lifts positioned alongside it. The lift lobby is signed from the main entrance and arrives on the same Plaza level.

The Plaza is a wide outdoor viewing terrace circling the building's full perimeter. The surface is smooth and step-free. The Plaza is free to visit: walk-in remainders are handed out at no charge at the on-site box office. If you want to guarantee your spot, pre-book a timed ticket at shop.elbphilharmonie.de for €3 per person (€2 for groups of 10 or more). Walk-in availability is best on weekday mornings; demand is highest on weekends.

Concert visits

All three halls have designated wheelchair spaces. The Grand Hall's vineyard-style seating surrounds the stage; wheelchair positions offer excellent sight lines.

Contact the box office by phone to book a wheelchair space, confirm companion seating, and arrange accessible entry timing. Popular programmes sell out months ahead; sign up to the newsletter for early announcements.

Getting there

From Hauptbahnhof, take U4 to Hafencity Universitat (5 minutes, 2 stops), then follow the flat waterfront promenade south-west to the Elbphilharmonie. U3 Baumwall is an alternative; both involve a short roll on a flat promenade. HVV buses on routes 6, 15, and 111 stop at Baumwall with low-floor step-free boarding. Check a mapping app for the current walking distance before you travel.

By car, the Elbphilharmonie underground garage (entrance from Am Kaiserkai) has disabled parking bays and a step-free internal route to the lobby.

Tips for wheelchair visitors

The Plaza is free on the day; turn up at the box office for a walk-in remainder ticket. To guarantee entry, pre-book for €3 at shop.elbphilharmonie.de (€2 per person for groups of 10 or more). Weekday mornings have the best walk-in availability. For concerts, call the box office rather than booking online. The full step-free Plaza circuit wraps the outdoor perimeter of the building.

Combine with Miniatur Wunderland, a short roll along the same flat waterfront promenade.
