Getting there: which door, which platform

Köln Cathedral sits directly above Cologne main station (Köln Hauptbahnhof). Coming out of the station, the cathedral plaza is one floor up. The lifts in Köln Hauptbahnhof's main hall bring you up to the plaza without stairs.

On the cathedral itself, do not aim for the main west portal: it sits at the top of a flight of steps. Wheel around to the north side and use the Domgässchen door, the official wheelchair entrance. The nave starts step-free once you are through.

Inside the Cathedral

The nave is paved flat and works in a wheelchair. The famous Gerhard Richter window, the Reliquary of the Three Kings shrine, and the Mailaender Madonna are all visible from wheelchair height in the main aisle.

The Treasury (Schatzkammer) is also step-free; it sits below the Cathedral and is reached via the barrier-free route signposted from the wheelchair entrance. Treasury opening hours are 10:00 to 18:00 daily, with last entry at 17:30. Treasury admission is 8 € standard, 4 € reduced for disabled visitors with a pass; the companion pays standard price unless they have their own qualifying pass.

The south tower climb is the famous Cologne stair grind: hundreds of steps to a viewing platform with no lift. Skip it. The Cathedral itself is the visit; the tower is a stair climb for a city view that you can match from the Rhine bridges or the KoelnTriangle deck across the river.

Services and the reserved wheelchair area

If you visit during a service rather than a tourist hour, the Cathedral reserves a wheelchair area in front of the first row of the north transept (Nordquerhaus). One companion per wheelchair user is invited to sit in the front row beside you. This is the closest seat to the high altar and is offered without a separate booking.

What to skip and how to plan time

Sightlines inside the Cathedral are designed for standing visitors, but the major works (Gerhard Richter window, Three Kings shrine, Mailänder Madonna) are clearly visible from wheelchair height in the central aisle.

The south tower climb is hundreds of stairs to a viewing platform with no lift. Skip it. The Rhine bridges and the KölnTriangle observation deck across the river both deliver a comparable city view without stair-climbing. Plan around 60 to 90 minutes for the Cathedral nave plus the Treasury, and longer if you want to visit during a service for the reserved wheelchair area.
