Disability discounts in Berlin
Where the discount is automatic, where it is not, and what proof you need.
Berlin's state museums give severely disabled visitors a half-price ticket and admit one medically necessary companion free. The Reichstag is free for everyone but needs advance booking. To use any discount, bring your disability card or a recent doctor's letter and present it at the dedicated accessible entrance.
The rules vary venue by venue. Privately run venues offer reduced rates, and transport discounts apply mainly to German residents. This page lists each venue's policy and what proof to bring.

The federal framework: SGB IX and the Schwerbehindertenausweis
German disability rights sit under SGB IX, which defines severe disability as a Grad der Behinderung of at least 50. The Schwerbehindertenausweis is the national card, issued to residents only; visitors substitute the European Disability Card, a home-country card, or a doctor's letter on letterhead. Mark B (companion required) is what most museums look for to admit a companion free.
State museums (SMB): half-price ticket plus free companion
The Staatliche Museen zu Berlin family covers Museum Island (Pergamonmuseum, Neues Museum, Altes Museum, Bode-Museum, Alte Nationalgalerie), Hamburger Bahnhof, the Gemaldegalerie, the Neue Nationalgalerie, and several smaller venues. SMB grants reduced admission at 50% of the standard fare to severely disabled visitors, and a medically necessary companion enters free where the disabled pass notes the requirement.
The Museum Island day pass costs 24 EUR; severely disabled visitors pay half-price on presentation of proof. The European Disability Card and recognised foreign cards are accepted in practice. Wheelchair loans are free at every staffed venue; the James Simon Galerie has the most reliable stock.
Reichstag and federal buildings: free, but book ahead
The Reichstag is free for everyone, with or without a disability. Pre-registration is mandatory for the dome, the rooftop terrace, and the parliament-floor tours; book online through the Bundestag visitor service at least a few working days in advance. Wheelchair users use the dedicated west-side entrance with priority security and a step-free lift to the dome floor. The Norman Foster glass dome has a gentle continuous spiral ramp.
Jewish Museum, Humboldt Forum, and Charlottenburg
The Jewish Museum Berlin's core exhibition is free for everyone. Temporary exhibitions are reduced for severely disabled visitors, with one companion free where the card carries mark B. The Daniel Libeskind building is step-free; wheelchair loans are free at the cloakroom.
The Humboldt Forum's permanent areas are mostly free. Special exhibitions charge a day ticket of 14 EUR; severely disabled visitors pay 7 EUR, and a companion enters free where the card carries mark B. Charlottenburg Palace, run by the Stiftung Preussische Schloesser und Gaerten (SPSG), admits the disabled visitor free with proof and one companion free with mark B. The same SPSG policy applies at Sanssouci in Potsdam.
Public transport: BVG, S-Bahn, and the AB zone
Public transport runs under the VBB fare system across BVG (U-Bahn, buses, trams) and S-Bahn Berlin. Holders of the Schwerbehindertenausweis with marks aG (extraordinary walking impairment), Bl (blind), or H (helpless), plus a valid Wertmarke (the small annual token bought from the Versorgungsamt), travel free on all VBB services. Mark B holders bring one companion free. This is a federal scheme for German residents and does not extend to short-stay visitors.
Visitors pay standard fares. The Berlin WelcomeCard bundles transport with attraction discounts but adds no disability reduction. The VBB Begleitservice provides a free trained-volunteer companion for any single journey, booked a few working days in advance. It is a service, not a fare reduction.
Intercity rail: Deutsche Bahn Mobility Service
Deutsche Bahn handles long-distance rail through Berlin Hauptbahnhof. The DB Mobility Service provides free boarding assistance, booked at least one day in advance. Schwerbehindertenausweis holders with mark B travel with one companion at no extra charge: the companion rides free in second class on most domestic services. Foreign visitors with an equivalent card can ask DB to apply the rule case by case.
The European Disability Card (EDC)
The European Disability Card is an EU-wide card harmonising recognition of disability for cultural and leisure activities. Germany participates. An EDC issued by another participating state is accepted at the SMB family, the Reichstag, the Jewish Museum, and the Humboldt Forum. Coverage at smaller municipal venues is uneven, so bring a backup doctor's letter. Non-EU visitors use a home-country card instead.
Documentation and tips
Pack two pieces of proof. First, your strongest: a national disability card, an EDC, or a pension certificate. Second, a doctor's letter on letterhead, dated within the past twelve months, stating your condition and the need for a companion if applicable. Carry both in print. A folded letter in your wallet beats any app when batteries or terminals fail.
Pre-register the Reichstag dome a few working days in advance. Use the dedicated accessible entrance at every state museum. Ask before you pay: some staff apply the discount automatically; others will ring up the standard ticket unless you request the disabled rate. It is yours by right.
