Nice wheelchair accessibility guide
Low-floor trams, free city museums, an adapted beach on the Promenade.
Nice has a fully low-floor tram, an on-demand door-to-door service called Mobil'Azur for wheelchair users, and a free adapted beach right on the Promenade des Anglais. Every major Nice museum admits disabled visitors free of charge with the French disability card.
Getting around: tram, bus, Mobil'Azur
Nice has one tram network operated by Lignes d'Azur. The trams are entirely low-floor and stop at platform height, so wheelchair users roll on and off without ramps or gap. Doors that fit wheelchairs are marked with a pictogram.
Buses are a mixed picture. Most Lignes d'Azur buses are low-floor with retractable ramps and a dedicated wheelchair space, but not every route is fully accessible. Check the line on the Lignes d'Azur site before relying on a specific bus.
When public transport will not work, Mobil'Azur is the on-demand alternative. It is door-to-door public transport for people who cannot use buses or trams, including wheelchair users and blind passengers. A single trip costs 1,70 €, with a one-off registration fee of 7,60 €. Multi-trip packs reduce the per-trip price.
Register on 0 805 20 06 06 (toll-free in France) or email mobilazur@lignesdazur.fr. Lines are open Monday to Saturday from 6am to 8pm, Sundays and holidays from 9am to 7pm.
Museums: free entry with the French disability card
Every major Nice museum gives free entry to holders of the French disability card (Carte Mobilité Inclusion with the «invalidité» mention). At Matisse, Masséna, the Archéologie Cimiez museum, Palais Lascaris, and the national Marc Chagall museum, a companion enters free with the cardholder. At the Beaux-Arts (Jules Chéret), the cardholder enters free but the museum's page does not state a companion policy. Bring your documentation and ask at reception.
If you travel from outside France or the EU, bring your home country's disability documentation. Acceptance varies by venue: city museums tend to be flexible, the national Chagall museum is stricter about the French card. The full table with prices and per-venue policy is on the Nice disability discounts page.
Beach: Plage Adaptée Carras
Plage Carras (285 promenade des Anglais) is Nice's main adapted beach. The city loans amphibious beach wheelchairs free of charge. There is no booking, no proof of disability required, and no fee. The team on site is trained as Handiplage lifeguards with the national swimming and water-rescue qualification.
On site you get accessible showers, accessible toilets, and a changing space. Reserved parking spaces for disability permit holders (French CES or CMI-S) are available nearby. The service is a seasonal summer service; the rest of the year the equipment is stored. Phone 04 97 13 28 24 to check current dates.
A second adapted beach, Plage du Centenaire (1 promenade des Anglais), is also listed by the city at the eastern end of the Promenade. The detailed facilities listing is for Carras only.
Parking and getting in from the airport
Nice Côte d'Azur (NCE) sits on Promenade des Anglais, a short ride from the city centre. Lignes d'Azur's tram network reaches the airport and is wheelchair-accessible end to end, with platform-level boarding on every stop. Tickets are bought from machines on the platform.
Once in town, French disability permit holders (CES or CMI-S) park free in marked spaces, per the city's handicap portal. If you carry a non-French disability badge, ask the tourist office on arrival how it is treated locally before parking in a paid bay.
