MuCEM wheelchair accessibility

Three accessible entrances on the J4 esplanade, free admission for the disabled visitor and one companion, and induction loops, audio guides and LSF tours across the building.

MuCEM is the museum of Mediterranean civilisations on the J4 esplanade by the Vieux-Port. All three entrances are wheelchair-accessible, with the J4 building entrance recommended. A lift connects street level to the esplanade. Admission is free for the disabled visitor and one companion on production of a CMI, with priority access at the door.

Accessibility details

Step-free entrance
All three MuCEM entrances are wheelchair-accessible. The recommended access is the J4 building entrance. A lift connects street level on the Quai du Port side up to the J4 esplanade, so wheelchair users do not need to go round to find a level approach.
Confirmed accessible
Lifts inside the museum
Reception, every exhibition space and the auditorium are wheelchair-accessible, with dedicated wheelchair spaces in the auditorium. The operator does not publish a per-floor lift count on its accessibility page; the practical claim is that the cultural offer is reachable autonomously on the J4 side.
Confirmed accessible
Accessible toilets
MuCEM publishes a Registre d'Accessibilité that documents accessible facilities; a public quote on number and location of accessible toilets was not on the dedicated motor-disability page. The reservations team on 04 84 35 13 13 confirms specifics on request.

Companion ticket
Admission is free for the disabled visitor and one companion. Present a CMI at the J4 reception to claim free admission and priority access. The standard adult ticket is 11 € (reduced 7,50 €); outdoor spaces are free for everyone.

Wheelchair loan
MuCEM's dedicated motor-disability page does not advertise a wheelchair loan service. Call the reservations team on 04 84 35 13 13 ahead of your visit if you need one.

Getting there

MuCEM sits on the J4 esplanade by the Vieux-Port and the new port at La Joliette. The closest RTM transit stops are metro Vieux-Port on line M1, metro Joliette on line M2, and tram T2 at République, Sadi-Carnot or Joliette. Vieux-Port is on the RTM list of nine wheelchair-accessible metro stations; Joliette is not, so plan the tram T2 (which is fully step-free) for the Joliette side of the walk.

From either metro it is about ten minutes to the J4 entrance. The flatter approach is along the Quai du Port to the lift up to the esplanade. If you are driving, the Indigo Vieux-Port Fort Saint-Jean car park has reserved disabled spaces, and a brief drop-off on the J4 esplanade itself is possible if you call the reservations service on 04 84 35 13 13 in advance.

Three accessible entrances and the lift to the esplanade

MuCEM has three entrances and the operator confirms all three are wheelchair-accessible. The recommended one is the J4 building entrance, where the ticket desk sits inside. A lift on the Quai du Port side carries wheelchair users up to the J4 esplanade.

The footbridges to Fort Saint-Jean and parts of the Jardin des Migrations are flagged as partially or not accessible. The headline museum, the temporary exhibitions and the auditorium are all reachable; the historic fort is the part to consider skipping if walking on rough stone is a problem.

Free admission and priority access

Admission is free for the disabled visitor and one companion on production of a recognised disability card; the operator names the Carte Mobilité Inclusion specifically. On arrival, present the card at the J4 reception desk. Both the permanent exhibition and the temporary exhibitions are covered. Priority access at the door is part of the same policy.

The standard adult ticket is 11 € (7,50 € reduced) for visitors paying full fare. Outdoor esplanade and Fort Saint-Jean exterior spaces are free for everyone.

Aids for visitors with hearing or vision impairment

Induction loops cover reception, ticketing, the cloakroom and the auditorium, and they are also fitted on the guided-tour audio systems. Most films shown inside exhibitions carry French subtitles. LSF-interpreted guided tours run at MuCEM regularly; a visioguide with LSF videos is available for the headline exhibitions.

Guide dogs and tipped white canes are admitted in the museum. Free magnifying glasses are available at the cloakroom. Permanent-exhibition routes include integrated tactile pathways with large-print and Braille text. Audio descriptions are downloadable in advance, and the personalised description service Souffleurs d'Images can be booked free with 15 days' notice.
