Cathédrale La Major wheelchair accessibility

Currently not wheelchair-accessible: steps block the main parvis. A French administrative court ordered an accessible route by 31 May 2026, so call the parish on 07 72 15 60 10 before you visit to confirm the works are complete.

Cathédrale La Major, on the waterfront between the Vieux-Port and La Joliette, is currently not wheelchair-accessible. The main parvis has steps and the diocese does not publish a side route. A French court ordered an accessible route by 31 May 2026; call 07 72 15 60 10 to confirm before visiting.

Step-free entrance
The main parvis on Place de la Major has steps up to the cathedral door. No alternative step-free entrance is published by the diocese or the parish. Call 07 72 15 60 10 to check whether the court-ordered accessibility works have made a route available.
Not accessible
Lifts inside the cathedral
No lift is publicly documented inside the cathedral today. Wikipedia notes that seven steps separate the transept from the sanctuary, so even once inside the layout is not flat. The court-ordered accessibility works due by 31 May 2026 may include an internal lift or adapted route.
Not accessible
Accessible toilets
No accessible-toilet information is published by the diocese or the parish. The closest accessible facilities are at the MuCEM, a short waterfront roll along the Esplanade Jean-Paul II.
Partially confirmed
Admission
Entry to the cathedral is free for everyone. A free admission is not contingent on a disability card; the practical question is whether you can get in given the steps. There is no paid ticket and therefore no separate companion tariff.
Confirmed accessible
Wheelchair loan
No wheelchair loan service is advertised. The cathedral does not currently document accessible-visitor services.

Why this page tells you not to plan a visit yet

Most attraction pages in this guide tell you how to visit. This one is the exception, because the practical answer in spring 2026 is that the cathedral is not wheelchair-accessible. A 2025 ruling by the Marseille administrative court requires the State to install an accessible route by 31 May 2026.

If you are reading this after that date, call the parish reception on 07 72 15 60 10 to confirm the ramp, lift or adapted route is in service before making the trip. The cathedral is on the waterfront between the Vieux-Port and the new port at La Joliette, so it is the kind of stop you can pencil in only if the answer on the phone is yes.

What you can do instead next door

The MuCEM is a five-minute roll along the J4 esplanade from La Major and is fully wheelchair-accessible (three accessible entrances, lift to the esplanade, free admission for the disabled visitor and one companion). See the MuCEM page in this guide for the practical detail.

The Vieille Charité, in the Le Panier district on the hill behind, houses two free museums (MAM and MAAOA permanent collections) and is the next accessible stop a wheelchair user can substitute for La Major today. The route up from the new port is on the step-free tram T2 to Sadi-Carnot or République.

Getting there if the access works are done

If the court-ordered works are complete by your visit, the most accessible route is the RTM tram. Joliette metro on line M2 is not on the RTM list of wheelchair-accessible stations, but the Joliette stop on the tram T2 and T3 is step-free (the entire tram network is wheelchair-accessible). Walk along the Esplanade Jean-Paul II to the cathedral. Marseille on-street parking is free for CMI holders if you drive; metered bays sit on the streets immediately east of the cathedral.
