Musée des Confluences wheelchair accessibility

Right of the main stairs is the step-free entrance. Lifts run to every level.

The Musée des Confluences is among the most accessible major museums in France. The step-free entry is the groups entrance on the forecourt, right of the main staircase. Lifts run between every level. Two free wheelchairs are at the cloakroom. Entry is free for the disabled visitor and one companion; standard adult tickets are €12.

The museum sits at the southern tip of the Presqu'île where the Saône meets the Rhône, fifteen minutes from the city centre on tram line T1. The building's exterior is a striking deconstructivist crystal-and-cloud design; the inside is four floors of permanent and temporary exhibitions covering natural history, anthropology, and the science of the planet.

One inaccessible passage to note: the walkway linking level 1 to level 2 is too steep for a wheelchair, and the dedicated view of the river Confluence between levels 1 and 2 is only reachable by stairs. The lifts cover the same vertical path, so you can still see every gallery, just not from that one walkway.

Step-free entrance via the groups entrance
The wheelchair-accessible entrance is on the forecourt, to the right of the main staircase. Use this entrance instead of the staircase that leads to the main hall. Lifts inside take you to every exhibition level.

Lifts to every level
Lifts run between every exhibition level. The one exception is the walkway between levels 1 and 2, which is too steep for a wheelchair, and the view of the Confluence between levels 1 and 2, which is only accessible by stairs. The lifts cover the same vertical distance, so every gallery is reachable, just not via that walkway.

Two free wheelchairs at the cloakroom
The museum keeps two wheelchairs at the cloakroom for free loan. Walking-stick seats are also available. Electric wheelchairs are welcome inside the museum, as are guide dogs on presentation of the dog's ID.

Accessible toilets

Getting there: TCL tram line T1

From the city centre, take tram line T1 to Musée des Confluences (the southern terminus). The whole TCL tram network is step-free at every stop, and T1 lands you 100 metres from the museum entrance.

From Lyon Part-Dieu (the main train station with TGV connections), the same T1 line runs directly. Allow about thirty minutes from Part-Dieu including the walk inside the station.

Accessible parking is signed in the museum's underground car park; the lift from car park level to the museum forecourt is step-free.

Inside: layout and what to see

The museum is organised around two cores: a permanent four-room exhibition (Origins, Species, Societies, Eternities) on level 2, and rotating temporary exhibitions on level 1 and the basement. Lifts run between all four levels including the cloakroom and reception on the lower level.

The permanent exhibition is the headline. Wheelchair routes are clearly marked: every showcase is at a viewable height for a seated visitor, and the gallery routes are wide enough for two wheelchairs to pass.

Comfort tools (noise-cancelling headsets, glasses for light hypersensitivity, fidget objects, communication keychains) are free on request at reception. The museum publishes easy-to-read guides following the FALC method.
