Basilique Notre-Dame de Fourvière wheelchair accessibility

Take the funicular up. Use the lift from the esplanade. Skip the tower.

The Basilique Notre-Dame de Fourvière is wheelchair-accessible. Ramps run up to the basilica on both sides, and a lift from the esplanade reaches the church floor between 09:00 and 18:30. Entry is free. The observatory tower is 345 steps and is not accessible.

Fourvière sits on a hill above Vieux Lyon, looking down on the city. Take the funicular line F2 from Vieux Lyon station: the line is step-free at both ends and lands you directly on the esplanade in front of the basilica. The funicular runs every few minutes during the day on a TCL ticket, the same fare as the metro or tram.

Inside, the basilica is one continuous nave at a single level. The mosaics on the upper walls and ceiling are best seen from the centre aisle; the chapels along the side are reached on a flat floor with no step-ups. Plan around an hour for the basilica itself, more if you join a Visite Découverte tour to see the carillon and the architectural detail.

Getting there: TCL funicular line F2

From the city centre, take metro line D to Vieux Lyon - Cathédrale Saint-Jean. Cross the concourse to the funicular platform. Line F2 (the upper funicular) goes directly to Fourvière. The trip is two minutes, runs every few minutes during the day, and is a standard TCL fare.

The funicular cabins at Fourvière station open level with the platform. There is no gap and no step. Walk out onto the esplanade and the basilica is in front of you.

If you are driving, accessible parking is on the esplanade in front of the basilica. The signed bays accept the European disability parking card.

Inside the basilica

The basilica is a single open nave at ground level. The mosaics covering the upper walls and ceiling are the main reason most visitors come; the best view is from the centre of the nave looking up.

The side chapels along the north and south walls are reached on a flat floor. The crypt (lower church) is a separate level. The route to the crypt is via a lift, signposted from the main nave; the route is the same one used for accessible toilets.

Photography is allowed without flash. The basilica gets crowded around the morning bus tours from cruise terminals; arrive early or late afternoon for a calmer visit.

The observatory tower: skip it

The Visite Insolite tour climbs 345 steps to a viewing platform at the top of the basilica's observatory tower. There is no lift on this route. The site advises against the tour for visitors with reduced mobility, heart problems, or vertigo. Do the view from the esplanade in front of the basilica instead, which is the same panorama as the tower at much higher level only without the extra height.
