Téléphérique de la Bastille wheelchair accessibility

Reduced round-trip with the companion at the same rate; the small step into the bubble cabin is the only barrier and staff load wheelchair users on request.

The Bastille cable car is Grenoble's signature ride: bubble cabins climbing 260 metres above the Isère. Plein-tarif round-trip is 9,80 €. Disabled visitors pay 5,10 € round-trip on proof and the companion gets the same rate. Cabins run continuously every 5 to 10 minutes. Closed for maintenance in January.

Accessibility at a glance

Accessibility details
WhatDetailsStatus
Step-free boarding
The valley station on quai Stéphane-Jay has step-free access from the riverside pavement. There is a small step at the cabin door (the bubble sits a few centimetres above the boarding platform) and staff hold the cabin and help wheelchair users on at the operator's discretion. A self-propelling wheelchair fits inside a cabin with one or two companions; a powered chair is feasible depending on dimensions.
Partially confirmed
Vertical access
The cable car itself is the lift between the city centre and the Bastille summit. There are no internal stairs to negotiate on the ride. At the summit, paths to the main viewing terraces are step-free; the older fort ramparts beyond have steps.
Partially confirmed
Accessible toilets
Accessible toilets at the valley and summit stations are not explicitly confirmed by the operator's site. We could not confirm this from official public sources. Check with the venue before you travel.
Unconfirmed
Companion fare
A disabled visitor pays 5,10 € round-trip (or 3,70 € one-way) on presentation of a valid justificatif. One companion gets the same rate. Buy at the valley-station window and present the document there.

Getting there

The valley station sits on quai Stéphane-Jay on the left bank of the Isère, a short walk from the old town. The nearest tram stops are Maison du Tourisme (lines A and B) and Saint-Bruno (line A), both fully low-floor with level platform boarding. From Grenoble station it is roughly ten minutes on tram B to Maison du Tourisme, then five minutes on foot along the river.

An accessible drop-off is possible at the valley station and there is paid parking under the nearby place Grenette. On-street parking is free at any meter when you display a European parking card (CES) or a French CMI marked Stationnement (CMI-S). An accessible taxi from the station takes about ten minutes door to door.

At the valley station

The valley station entrance is step-free from the riverside pavement. The ticket windows and queue area are on one level. The boarding platform sits a few centimetres above the cabin floor on the loading side. Staff hold the cabin for wheelchair users on request and help with the small lip into the bubble.

A self-propelling chair fits comfortably with one or two companions in the cabin. A powered chair is feasible depending on its dimensions; call the operator beforehand if you ride a wide or long-frame chair.

Cabins arrive every 5 to 10 minutes throughout the day, so there is no need to time the visit. The ride takes about four minutes one way. The last ascent leaves 15 minutes before the daily closing.

At the Bastille summit

Once at the top, the immediate terrace and the main viewing platform are step-free with level paving and bench seating. The Géo Charles photo wall, the on-site restaurant terrace, and the gift shop all sit on the step-free platform. Paths into the deeper fort ramparts beyond the main terrace have flights of steps and gravel surfaces and are not wheelchair accessible.

There are no internal stairs to climb to enjoy the view back over Grenoble. The view back toward the Vercors and the Chartreuse massifs is the same from the step-free terrace as from the higher fortifications, so an inaccessible upper rampart is not a missed view.

Tickets, fares and the companion rule

Plein tarif is 9,80 € round-trip and 6,60 € one-way. The reduced rate for disabled visitors, RSA recipients and visitors aged 75 and over is 5,10 € round-trip and 3,70 € one-way.

A companion of a disabled visitor pays the same reduced rate. The operator's site is explicit: one companion only, on presentation of a justificatif. Children under 5 travel free as part of a family trip; the 5-to-15 children's rate matches the disabled-visitor rate.

Plan around the January closure

The Bastille cable car closes for maintenance throughout January. If you are visiting Grenoble in midwinter, plan the trip outside that month or factor in that the ride is not running. From February onwards the cabins resume the standard continuous service, with the last departure at midnight on Friday and Saturday during peak months.

If you cannot board the cable car for any reason, the Montée de Chalemont staircase from the old town to the slopes is not a wheelchair-accessible alternative; the only step-free route to the Bastille summit is the cable car itself.
