Accessibility at a glance
| What | Details | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Step-free entrance | The museum entrance on place Lavalette is reached on a level paved square from the tram stop. The underground car park beneath the museum provides an accessible drop-off for visitors with reduced mobility, with a lift up into the museum lobby. The lobby and ticket desks sit on one level. | Partially confirmed |
| Lifts to upper floors | Lifts inside the building serve the upper galleries of the permanent collection. We could not confirm full lift coverage of every gallery from official public sources; on arrival ask the reception for the up-to-date map of accessible galleries. | Partially confirmed |
| Accessible toilets | Accessible toilets are not explicitly described on the museum's public information page. We could not confirm their location from official public sources. Check with the venue before you travel. | Unconfirmed |
| Companion ticket | Admission is free for the disabled visitor and one companion. The free policy covers both the permanent collection (free for everyone) and the main temporary exhibition (plein tarif 14€, free on disability proof). Present a Carte Mobilité Inclusion, Carte d'Invalidité, European Disability Card or AAH attestation at the ticket desk. | Confirmed accessible |
Getting there
The museum sits on place Lavalette on the left bank of the Isère, right at the edge of the historic centre. The closest stop is Notre Dame Musée on tram lines B and D, both served by fully low-floor trams with level boarding. Bus lines 17 and 62 use the same stop. From Grenoble station it is about ten minutes on tram B without changes.
If you arrive by car, the underground car park beneath the museum has a dedicated accessible drop-off for visitors with reduced mobility. The entrance is via quai Jongkind and boulevard Maréchal Leclerc. On-street parking is free at any meter when you display a European parking card (CES) or a French CMI marked Stationnement (CMI-S). For door-to-door rides, the M Flexo+ PMR service serves the museum on prior booking.
Entrance, lifts and indoor circulation
The lobby and ticket desks are on one level inside the main entrance. The underground car park connects to the lobby via a lift, which is the easiest step-free route if you arrive by car or accessible taxi.
Lifts serve the upper floors of the permanent collection. The museum's public information page does not list every gallery individually; ask the reception desk on arrival for the current map of accessible galleries because temporary exhibition layouts sometimes change the route. The permanent collection ranges from medieval painting through the Modern wing, with most of the high-traffic galleries reachable autonomously by lift.
Free admission, the companion ticket and accepted proof
The permanent collection is free for everyone, so a disabled visitor and a companion enter on the same terms as any other visitor on a permanent-only visit. For the main temporary exhibition, plein tarif is 14€ and tarif réduit is 7€. Disabled visitors and one accompanying person are admitted free on proof, alongside under-26s, job-seekers and visitors arriving on the first Sunday of the month.
Accepted documents at the ticket desk typically include the Carte Mobilité Inclusion mention Invalidité (CMI-I), the older Carte d'Invalidité, and attestations for the AAH or AEEH benefits. Foreign visitors should bring the equivalent national disability card and a photo ID and ask at the desk; the museum's public page only refers to 'personnes en situation de handicap ou d'invalidité' without enumerating accepted cards.
Practical tips
The museum is closed every Tuesday and on 1 January, 1 May and 25 December. Otherwise it opens daily 10:00 to 18:30.
The note on the museum's website that the digital site is non-compliant with the French web-accessibility standard (RGAA) applies to the website, not to the building. The PMR drop-off in the underground car park and the lift up to the lobby are working physical-access features. If you need an up-to-date map of step-free galleries, ask reception on arrival; the staff are used to the request.
