SMK wheelchair accessibility

Step-free into the modern wing, lifts to every floor, accessible toilets in both buildings, and a free companion ticket at the till.

Statens Museum for Kunst (SMK) is Denmark's national gallery, on Sølvgade in central Copenhagen. It is a two-building site: a historic wing from 1896 and a modern extension opened in 1998. The God Adgang scheme has certified SMK across every audit category, making it one of Copenhagen's strongest accessibility venues.

For wheelchair users the practical picture is straightforward. The step-free entrance is on the modern-wing side. Lifts move between floors across both buildings. Accessible toilets are in both wings. The companion concession is generous: a presented Ledsagerkort or a home-country equivalent admits the accompanying person free of charge.

SMK sits a 5-minute roll from Nørreport, the city's main step-free interchange. The S-train hub, the M1/M2/M3 metro lines, and a dozen bus routes all converge at Nørreport with lifts to every platform. The roll from the station follows smooth modern paving along Sølvgade.

Accessibility details
WhatDetailsStatus
Step-free entrance via the modern wing
The wheelchair-accessible entrance is on the modern (1998) wing side of the building. The historic 1896 entrance has steps; staff route wheelchair users to the modern-wing door, which opens directly into the ticketing area. The God Adgang factsheet confirms the modern building (Den moderne bygning) as a registered accessible zone.
Confirmed accessible
Lifts between floors in both wings
SMK uses internal lifts to move between the ground floor, the permanent collection on the upper floor, and the basement-level study halls. The Permanente udstillinger (permanent exhibitions), Biograf (cinema), Børnenes Værksted (children's workshop), and Studiesal 1+2 (study halls) are all registered as accessible zones on the God Adgang factsheet.
Confirmed accessible
Limited wheelchair loan (phone ahead)
SMK provides a small number of manual wheelchairs for use inside the museum. Stock is limited and not guaranteed at peak weekends; phone ahead on +45 33 74 84 94 to reserve. Visitors with their own electric or manual chair use the modern-wing entrance directly without further arrangement.
Partially confirmed
Accessible toilets in both wings
The accessible toilet by the cloakroom (Toilet ved garderoben) is a registered God Adgang zone. A second accessible toilet sits in the modern wing near the temporary exhibitions. Both are unisex with a door wide enough for a standard manual chair and a side transfer to the WC.
Confirmed accessible
Standard rate for the disabled guest; companion enters free
The disabled visitor pays the standard adult ticket published on SMK's site. The companion (one person) enters free of charge on a presented Ledsagerkort. In practice, SMK accepts a home-country equivalent (European Disability Card, UK Access Card, US ADA letter) plus photo ID at the till. Children under 18 always enter free, regardless of disability status.
Confirmed accessible
No formal priority lane (queues are short)
SMK is a museum, not a theme park, and does not operate a priority queue. The ticketing hall in the modern wing rarely backs up beyond a few minutes outside the busiest summer weekends. Pre-book your time slot online on the SMK shop site for the temporary exhibitions to skip the till queue entirely.
Partially confirmed
Step-free Nørreport, 5 minutes' roll away
Nørreport is the closest station and one of Copenhagen's main step-free interchanges. The M1, M2, and M3 metro lines stop there, as do every S-train line and the central regional services. Lifts serve every platform. The roll from the Nørreport exit up Frederiksborggade and across Øster Voldgade onto Sølvgade is about 500 metres on smooth modern paving with dropped kerbs at every crossing.
Confirmed accessible
Service dogs welcome
Service dogs are admitted across the public galleries at no charge as part of the museum's standard access policy. The cloakroom near the modern-wing entrance can supply a water bowl on request. Phone ahead on +45 33 74 84 94 if the dog is travelling on a non-Danish document and you want the staff to file a note before arrival.

Overview

SMK is Denmark's national gallery, holding the country's largest collection of art from the 14th century to the present day. The building is the work of architect Vilhelm Dahlerup (the historic 1896 wing) and architects C.F. Møller and Anna Maria Indrio (the modern 1998 extension). The two buildings are joined by an interior link that the visitor crosses without leaving the museum.

Highlights include the Danish and Nordic art of the Golden Age (Eckersberg, Købke, Hammershøi), the European old masters (Mantegna, Tintoretto, Cranach), the French moderns (Matisse, Picasso, Modigliani), and a strong rotating temporary-exhibition programme. Allow at least 2 hours; an unhurried visit takes 3 to 4 hours.

For wheelchair users the key fact is that SMK has been audited across every God Adgang category. That is the strongest accessibility audit signal a Danish venue can hold. The practical layout supports the audit: a step-free modern-wing entrance, internal lifts to every floor, accessible toilets in both wings, and a generous companion policy applied silently at the ticket counter.

Where to enter

Use the modern-wing entrance on the south side of the building. This is the wheelchair-accessible entrance and the one where staff apply the companion concession at the till. The historic 1896 entrance has a flight of stone steps and is not wheelchair-accessible.

From the Nørreport exit on Frederiksborggade, head north past the lakes' end of Øster Voldgade, then turn right onto Sølvgade. The modern-wing entrance is the lower glass-fronted door on the south side, set back from the historic building's grand staircase. Look for the SMK logo and the accessible-entrance pictogram by the door.

How the discount works

Present a Ledsagerkort, a home-country disability card, or a recent doctor's letter on letterhead plus photo ID at the till. The disabled visitor pays the standard adult rate published on SMK's site; the accompanying person (one companion) enters free. Children under 18 always enter free, separately from any disability concession.

The companion concession applies to the permanent collection and the temporary exhibitions on a single ticket. Audio guides and the museum-cinema programme are included in the standard ticket on most exhibitions; check the day's programme on the SMK ticket page.

Galleries and lifts

The permanent collection occupies the upper floors of both wings. The lift in the modern wing reaches every public floor of that building; an internal lift in the historic wing reaches the upper-floor galleries of the 1896 building. The two wings connect on the main exhibition floor, so a wheelchair user crosses the museum without descending again.

The Studiesal (study halls) on the basement level are reached by a separate lift and are a registered God Adgang accessible zone. The Børnenes Værksted children's workshop sits off the main hall and is step-free. Café Magnolia, the museum café, is accessible from the ground floor and has step-free entry from the modern wing.

Toilets and rest stops

The main accessible toilet is by the cloakroom near the modern-wing entrance (a registered God Adgang zone), with a door wide enough for a standard manual chair and a side transfer to the WC. A second accessible facility sits in the modern wing near the temporary-exhibition halls.

Café Magnolia, on the ground floor of the modern wing, has step-free tables and is the natural mid-visit rest stop. The museum shop, also a God Adgang zone, is across the same ground floor.

How to get there

Train and metro: Nørreport is the closest interchange and one of Copenhagen's main step-free hubs. The M1, M2, and M3 metro lines and every S-train line stop there, with lifts to every platform. The roll from the Nørreport exit to Sølvgade is about 500 metres on smooth paving.

Bus: lines 6A, 26, 184, 185, and 14 stop on Sølvgade or nearby on Øster Voldgade with middle-door wheelchair ramps. Disabled parking spaces are on Sølvgade and on the side streets running south to Øster Voldgade. Accessible taxis (4x35, Dantaxi) drop directly at the modern-wing entrance.

Tips for wheelchair visitors

Pre-book your timed entry on the SMK ticket page during the busiest summer weekends and over Christmas. The till queue at the modern-wing entrance can build to 10 to 15 minutes during the peak afternoon slot, especially for the temporary exhibitions.

Plan the visit around the lift between wings. The link is on the main exhibition floor and lets you cross from the modern wing's contemporary holdings to the historic wing's Golden Age galleries without going back to the ground floor.

Allow 2 hours for a focused permanent-collection visit, 3 to 4 hours for an unhurried walk with a temporary exhibition and a café break. The most demanding floor for a wheelchair user is the historic upper floor, with long gallery runs with smooth wooden parquet but tight pivot points between rooms.
